Dolphin

The Sheffield Arms and Ball are still open and I think the Crown has reopened after being closed for a while - I've often wondered where was the Victoria?

Hi YATESACE

I have put a 1950's map together showing some of the pubs,

from top to bottom on the map they are ..

Bowling Green Hotel, 2 Upwell Lane.

Victoria Hotel 146 Carlisle Road

Wellington Inn, 124 Carlisle Road.

Hodson Hotel, 110 Carlisle Road.

However there is one I can't put a name to,

it's on the corner of Adsetts and Clevedon Street.

Prince of Wales, 20 Adsetts Street

Thanks Richard,

no wonder I could not find it,

it's listed on here as being on Adsett Street.

One to add,

20 Adsetts St, John Sissons, beer house.

1925 Kelly's

Edit:

I have made correction to Adsett St and updated keepers,

Prince of Wales 20 Adsetts Street

If someone can generate a map govering what is generally believed to make up "Grimesthorpe" I'll maybe be able to come up with some more, e.g. Sir Robert Peel 157 Carlisle Street, is that Grimesthorpe ?

Atlas, 131 Carlisle Street East (closed 1922) ?

Wrekin 143 Carlisle Street East ?

Need either a map or a list of Grimesthorpe Streets/Roads.

This list just from me looking down my list for "Grimesthorpe" :

Ball 66 Upwell Street

Beehive Grimesthorpe (Street address ?)

Bowling Green 2 Upwell Lane

Brunswick 46 Grimesthorpe Road

Buckenham 62 Grimesthorpe Road

Crown 41 Carlisle Road

Dolphin New Grimesthorpe

Hodson Hotel (Hogdson ?) 110 Carlisle Road

Normanton 123 Grimesthorpe Road

Prince of Wales New Grimesthorpe (Adsetts Street)

Saracens Head 88-90 Grimesthorpe Road (see Tea Gardens)

Sheffield Arms 107 Upwell Street, Grimesthorpe

Sheffield House (possibly Sheffield Arms)

Tea Gardens 90 Grimesthorpe Road (see Saracens Head)

Victoria Hotel 146 Carlisle Road

Victoria Hotel New Grimesthorpe (see above)

Wellington 124 Carlisle Road

Who Can Tell 33 Botham Street

Amateurs posting the original information up ....

Hang on ... it was me !

[i generated all the original data, so, any errors are all down to me; the list is mature enough to be "getting better" and to be further edited when mistakes are found].

131 Carlisle Street East is The Royal Rifle Corps Hotel in the 50's

OS Map 93

Edit: - Which isn't on the pubs list.

Unless it isn't a pub, just a Hotel ?

The Crown on Carlisle Road was pulled down in the 1970s - my husband used to live next door to it.

I'd say it was the immediate area either side of Upwell Steet but where Brightside starts one way and where Burgreave/Pitsmoor/Page Hall starts is another matter. Grimethorpe Road is quite a length and some of the pubs on the list (Tea Gardens etc) would probably fall into Pitsmoor or Burngreave. Maybe!

It's a puzzle ...

Crown Inn, 87 Forncett Street (Joseph Sanderson, 1871; Mrs Amy Sanderson, 1948)

Pedestrian Tavern, 238 Forncett Street (John Frost, 1871) - are we in Brightside with this one ?

Red Lion, Forncett Street, 1864 or earlier - no known keepers (on my list anyway ...)

The Victory Palace was a cinema wasn't it? I remember the Victory sweet shop - still trading as that until recently

Surprised non of the top brass have directed you to this post YATESACE.

SH Link

(needs a link fairy's magic wand)

I just found it by searching 'Beehive' If it's the same Beehive, it used to be a bikie pub in the 60's - disco lights, juke box, very noisy, unsavoury characters, don't go to the toilet alone.

Anyway, seems its been demolished, another icon removed, another memory wiped.
