Hi

I would like to know what churches were located in the area near Pond Street around 1860-1870. I am writing a story on my great grandfather Albert Bird who lived at 43 Pond Street prior to his departure to Australia in September 1869 and would like to have an indication of what Church he and his parents may have attended. They were baptised in the Church of England.

regards

Hi John,

Glad to hear the story's coming along. Do you know whether he would have been CofE, Roman Catholic or Non-comformist? I don't know whether you have seen this map on here? No exact date but pre 1900.

There's a list of churches here that might help.

The 1861 and 1871 census both list the Ecclesiastical district as St Pauls.

I have the transcriptions for the Sheffield parish church of ST Peter and he is not baptised there.

Hi Bayleaf

Thanks for your reply. They were CoE. I was looking for the Church they may have gone on Christmas Eve in 1868. This was the last Christmas Albert would be with his family as he cam to Australia in September 1869.

. Hi John, They may have been baptised at St Paul's which was located on what is now called the Peace gardens. It was closed in 1937 & demolshed teh following year - see http://www.sheffieldfhs.org.uk/serv_con/StPaul's.htm.

Sheffield Archives has all its baptism records see http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraries/archives-and-local-studies

Someone may do a look up for you - try an entry on Sheffield FHS message board http://www.sheffieldfhs.org.uk/ or Sheffield iNdexers http://www.sheffieldindexers.com/

Best of luck, John

He could also have gone to the old parish church, Saint Peter & Saint Paul, which is now the Cathedral. If he was living on Pond Street I would suspect he would have gone 'up into town', which would have been close, and both SSPeter & Paul and St Paul's that john mentioned were very central.
