The Old House At The Top Of Norfolk Park Road

Recommended Posts

On my way to work each morning I pass an old boarded up old house at the top of Norfolk Park Road.

If you dont know it its quite a grand stone built house completely detached from the surrounding houses set in its own modest grounds.

I wonder if anyone knows anything about it?

Lee.

Thanks for the map identification Steve.

I had thought it was the house that a former girlfriend had a room in many years ago, - but it isn't.

The last time I was up on Norfolk Road was last December,

though I was aware of the empty house mentioned by Lee,

it was the one next door that took my eye.

I don't think this one can be seen from Granville Road.

Does anyone have any more information about the old vicarage/rectory on Norfolk road?, or remember visiting when it was still used as a vicarage? Also the date it was built and whether there was another building on this site before this was built. Thank you

Hi cat88 and welcome to Sheffield History,

looking at an 1850's map,

the house or vicarage appears to have been built at a later date on land named 'Lathe Field'.

SH Link Mention of Lathe Field, but Gramps seems to have it at Chippinghouse.

Good point vox, however there is every possibility that more than one Lathe Field existed.

1850's map overlay, with the site of the vicarage marked.

The Old House, 84 Norfolk Road.

This property has been empty for a number of years and was bought by a muslim group to become a community centre. The planning dates have now passed and as this property is within a conservation area it is in grave danger of being left until it is no longer a vaiable old building and the community feel that it will have to be pulled down. This is not what we expect from buildings listed within a conservation area. No one including the Sheffield council seem to be able or wish to look into this concern. As is is opposite Norfolk Heritage park which is a beautifully restored inner city park it is a blight on the landscape. The Friends' of Norfolk Heritage park are anxious to see this building restored to its former glory Thank you

Is it as abandoned as previously thought ?

September 19 2010

To save confusion between the two buildings mentioned in this Topic,

the what was or still is, old run down house is at number 84 Norfolk Road,

with the old vicarage standing next door at number 88 Norfolk Road.

I had thought it was the house that a former girlfriend had a room in many years ago, - but it isn't.

But she did live at number 88 as shown in your latest map which now identifies it as the old vicarage.

This was in 1983 and at the time the large house had been divided up into a number of small flats and rooms for student type accomodation.
