John Milnes - Samuel Shore

We now proceed to John Milnes of Wakefield Esq (1), the fourth son of Robert Milnes and Hannah Poole, which John was in the commission of the

peace and a deputy lieutenant for the West Riding of the county of York.

He was married at Sheffield 9th February 1737 to Mary, born 1714, daughter of Samuel Shore (2) of Sheffield, in the county of York, merchant

(by Jane his wife. daughter and at length heir of George Sykes, of Norton, in Staffordshire, Gent) and died at Buxton in Derbyshire 12th

October 1771 in the 62nd year of his age and was buried in the family vault at Wakefield, having had issue by her, who died in the year 1791,

and was buried in Walcot church, Bath, three sons and four daughters

1) Sir Robert Shore Milnes of whom afterwards

2) Samuel born at Wakefield the 6th of November 1750 and died 10th February 1767 and was buried in the family vault

3) John Milnes late of Wakefield, and of Page Hall Esq, in the parish of Sheffield now of Lower Canada, a deputy lieutenant and in the commission

of the peace for the West Riding of the county of York. Born at Wakefield 15th December 1751 who married Catherine daughter of Edward

Carr, of Cledmond, in the county of Carlow, Ireland and has had issue :

Alfred Shore Milnes born at Paris 21st May 1792 and baptized at the Old Jewry, London.

William Poole Milnes born at Brompton in Middlesex 25th March 1796 and baptized at Wakefield.

John Milnes born at Wakefield 13th August 1799, all living

Caroline born in London 14th November, 1797, and baptized with her brother John, at Wakefield, died there 12th April 1800 and was buried

in the family vault.

Of the daughters

1) Hannah, eldest daughter (of John Milnes and Mary Shore) died unmarried, 7th October 1802, aged 60 and was buried at Kensington

in Middlesex.

2) Jane, died young.

3) Mary, was married at Wakefield, 18th November 1773 to Edward Whitwell Esq sometime a captain in the Horse Grenadier Guards,

and secretary to General Sloper when in India; she died in 1803, and he in 1804 and had one son,

John Whitwell Esq - a lieutenant colonel in the army, who died before his father, unmarried, at St. Pierre in the island of Martinique

in the West Indies and two daughters, coheirs, of whom

Roseline, the eldest, married her first cousin, James Torre Esq,;

and Emma is the wife of Sir George Berney Brograve of Worstead House in Norfolk, Bart.; and

4) Esther, the youngest daughter (of John Milnes and Mary Shore) was married at Normanton, in Yorkshire, 22d August 1774 to

James Torre, of Snydale, in the county of York, Esq and died 14th June 1782 aged 28 years and was buried at Normanton, leaving issue :

James Torre, now of Snydale, Esq., an officer in the army born, 1st June 1775, and married Roseline Whitwell, as above mentioned;

John Torre an officer in the army, born 23d December 1776, and died in the island of St Vincent, 1804, unmarried.

ann Henry Torre, born 1778, died an infant.

Henry Torre, a clergyman, born 17th September 1780 and

Hannah Maria, born 17th April 1782, married to James Favill, Esq., of Normanton, in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
