Dividends And Certificates

I think it worked like this (willing, even eager, to be corrected if anyone else knows differently).

You declared yourself bankrupt, as, and when, you were in a position to pay off your debts you declared a Dividend to your creditors (usually one of the major inns or hotels); once you had paid off your creditors (or made considerable progress ?) you received a certificate to say you were no longer in a bankruptcy situation.

l always thought that the person that was declared bankrupt had a number of years to wait regardless of how quickly he paid off his debts, if they were paid off too soon then it would appear the person had salted money instead of paying his or her debts,[ l stand to be corrected on this] Cheers skeets

John C Jardine was my gt gt gt gt grandfather. His full name was John Cron Jardine. Don't know a great deal about him. He was a linen draper and traded in Campo Street, Sheffield. My gt gt gt grandfather William married twice. On his first certificate (1843) John is listed as a tea dealer. In 1851 he was down as a draper. Other than that he's a bit allusive - can't find a reord of death and he isn't on any census for Sheffield. His wife and family lived in Harvest Lane, Brightside.
