Lysanderix
It looks exactly what it is…a pile of redundant ,ugly ,old shipping containers…fit for use almost anywhere but in a City Centre…but, I am forgetting ,Sheffield has, in the past, been called “ Philistine City”.😙😙

LeadFarmer
Compared to the symmetry of the front, this aspect of the Town Hall just seems a bit random and unsymmetrical, seems a jumble of different buildings. Were these parts built afterwards?

Ponytail
Four years after opening 21st May 1897 an extension discussed, lack of finance and WWI delayed it until first extension opened 29th May1923 by the then Prince of Wales (Edward VIII who abdicated) Further extension was considered necessary in the 1930's. WWII delayed it as did financial restrictions. Work started July 1973 on the Extension nicknamed the Eggbox, foundation stone laid 1st Aug 1975 opened 7th March 1977

fentonvillain
I have what I think must be a unique record in relation to The Town Hall. I worked a beat on many occasions which necessitated having my refreshment break in the police box at Town Hall ( and escorting a few drunks there to await the Black Maria) between 1961 and 1964. I dictated copy to the Morning Telegraph copy-takers from the Press Room alongside the Council Chamber in 1973 as a reporter for the said newspaper, and I produced and commentated the fist ever live broadcast of a council meeting for BBC Radio Sheffield sometime between 1979 and 1981. Considering I was raised in a house with an attic view of the Town Hall from 1942...I think that's a pretty rare connection. But I'm proud of it.

I fully agree with you. What is wrong with Sheffield voters, that they keep voting for the same proven idiots who have turned a great city into a laughing stock of an empty backwater?
Lysanderix
Councillors usually rely on their Officers for guidance. Having had a few “ brushes” with highly paid senior officers in the past I am not at all surprised with some of the decisions made by our Council with regard to the rapid redundancy of many civic developments. Frankly, those Officers I met with ,would have struggled to hold down senior roles in private, competitive, industry or commerce.
Ponytail
Townhall, Sheffield by the "D.F.& Co." Series printed in England by Delittle, Fenwick & Co. York. Postmarked October 19th 1904. Sent by my grandfather to his parents. Seems a strange photograph... It looks as though its been altered to appear to have be taken at night, the moon doesn't look right either. Perhaps someone could work a bit of magic and show what it should have looked like in the daytime.
