DaveH
Hi, Can anyone remember the name of the florists on Chapel Walk in the 50`s & 60`s which was opposite The Sidewalk cafe? Any info on the other shops would also be helpful. Thanks, Gasman The florists and the greengrocers on Chapel walk, regularly used to have their stuff outside the shop in the street which narrowed down what was already a very narrow, very busy (especially on Saturdays) walkway. Can't remember the name of the florists, or the greengrocers, or even the bakers shop which were all on that side. Lower down on that side were Phillip Cann the music man's (on the "corner" where Chapel Walk bends slightly) and the Methodist bookshop along with some other religious shop. On the opposite side of the walk, as well as the back entrance to M&S it was mainly ladies boutiques and clothes shops.

I used to visit the shop with my grandmother when I was a child in the 50`s. Many people remember the shop but the name stumps them. Any info on the other shops would also be helpful. Thanks, Gasman The double fronted green-grocer and fruiterer on Chapel Walk was trading as J. W. Bradshaw in the eighties and nineties. I worked in the city then and used to buy our veg there. There was always a queue snaking from the stuff stacked outside leading right into the shop. When they left Chapel Walk they went to a smaller shop that I seem to remember was in Fitzalan Square, but the choice didn't seem to be the same. DaveH
It's not History Dave, it's only forty five years ago. Thanks Steve, - thats like saying that at 54 I'm not history yet, - contrary to what the young uns I work with think. Then again, we are of a similar age When we were at school in the 1960's - 70's History books, and therefore History itself, ended in 1945 when the second world war ended and the "atomic age" began. Things have moved on a bit since then. A few years ago I was supervising a History DME (Decision Making Exercise) exam. In this type of exam the students are presented with data, newspaper cuttings, copies of books, paintings, photographs, even artifacts about a particular event and they, like real historians, have to piece the story of the event together. Due to it's nature and purpose the piece of history is a;ways "off syllabus" so that the students will have no prior knowledge or teaching of the event being asked about. In the "mock" exam it was about The Childrens Crusade in 1212. It took my interest because one of the pieces of "evidence" provided was the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamlyn. While the students were doing the exam I took some pleasure in looking through the paper myself and trying to work out the answers. I was looking forward to the "real" exam and got the job of supervising it. The paper was about the Mai Lai Massacre in 1968 during the Vietnam War Suddenly 1968, a year in my own lifetime which I can remember well had become history. As part of the evidence were some photographs. I can well remember looking at these same photographs as a 13 year old newspaper boy on the front cover of the newspapers I was delivering on that very day in 1968. Then the reality sunk in with my very next thought B***** Hell!, I'm History !!!!

I remember Victoria Hall, my Gran used to be a cleaner there and I often used to go in there with her. I used to marvel at the huge Organ pipes around the main hall and all the keys and buttons on the huge organ.
Guest suzy
Anyone remember the "Richard Shops" adverts on TV? I think, if my memory serves me well it went something like:- "Richard Shops are filled with all the pretty things, lots of lovely pretty things to wear. Hey there pretty girl make the world a .....??? place......????? come buy your clothes at Richard Shops" I loved this shop and have still got a swimming costume I bought from there many moons ago which I wear! Dont laugh - it actually still looks good. You know what they say about fashion - it always does a full circle and comes round again Now where are my Bay City Roller trousers????? :)
