Cold War Air Raid Sirens

Well living in Millhouses 1965-1971 I can't recall ever hearing sirens.  Perhaps the inhabitants of the south of the city weren't worth saving?😲

The Government issued advice was entitled "Protect & Survive" and encompassed pamphlets, Radio and TV.

A minuteman missile is named after the 18C US revolutionary soldiers.  They were civilians who were able to pick up their weapons and muster at a minute's notice.

In 1952/3 I was a young lad living in what was then a newly built house on the Littledale estate and I well recall hearing the sirens sounding prior to a night time aerial exercise taking place over the City...complete with searchlights and  piston engined bombers flying overhead ( my Dad rold me they were" Washingtons" an anglicised B29 on loan from the USA)....presumably being "intercepted "by Meteor night fighters....From memory, I believe the Star gave prior notice.

As a normal event, periodically, the sirens would be tested ....and this went on for years.
