It was the Victoria that was called the Low Drop or Lower Drop

as we use to call it.

I only know of 2 pubs on Walkley Bank Rd. The Sportsman and The crown. I lived on there in the 80's and it wasn't there then. Can't think where abouts it could have been UkeLass.

It was opposite what use to be the Royal Oak . I know the Royal Oak was turned into

a home some years ago , maybe the same has happened to the Freedom Hotel.

I think it was on the corner of King James Street and Greaves Street.

In which case I think you've got your road names mixed up UkeLass. Walkley Bank Road isn't near there.

Freedom Hotel, 26 Walkley Road.

Of course it was. Can't believe I forgot that (well it doesn't surprise me really) ;-)

UkeLass - you put a "Bank" in the wrong place. lol

Ok then -

Freedome Hotel, Walkley Road - Bottom Freedom

Sorry vox, I thought it was continuation of Walkley Bank road.

I will blame Douglas Lamb for that, in his book he has it down

as 26 Walkley Bank Road. The book's full of errors. ;-)

I have met Douglas Lamb as he once came to give our steam club a talk about all things Sheffield and of course, about the contents of his books.

I have a signed copy of one of his books, but it isn't one of the "pub on every corner" ones.

Strange thing was, during his talk he didn't drink any alcohol at all, even though he wasn't driving, and he wanted to pay him in pipe tobacco rather than money.

I 've spoke to him on the phone and wrote to him when he wanted some details

of pubs in our area.

He says he's not from Sheffield and most of the information he gets seems

to be from peoples memories, yes I know, we all have a problem with that.

If I was going to do a book I'd get the facts from the Central Library, it's

all there for the asking and free. He wasn't very thorough , you can't believe

how many arguements it's caused in the pubs. he he
