Guest Lady H
A big welcome to the site and what a great story. I don't know if you have read all the posts on the Fiesta but I must ask if you remember my sister Carol? She was there from the club opening and would have handed you you wage packet. Let me know if you you do remember her. Hi mickjj, many thanks, I do indeed remember Carol, what a small world!! I doubt if she would remember me, maybe she remembers Roger or Noey the chef?? it was such a special time of my life, I was 18 and loved every second I worked there, especially when the taxis drivers taking us home used to go via "greasy Veras" for an egg and tomato butty !! please say hi to Carol and give her my love, she would maybe remember me hanging around with Renato out of the restaurant or his sister Anna-Maria? xx
Guest DrDiamond
THE FIESTA CLUB LOCATION Sandwiched between Arundel Gate and Pond Street PICTURES The Whiteman Brothers Live At The Fiesta FACTS The Fiesta Club had a resident band - this was "The Terry Clayton Band" for most of the venue's lifetime but there was another resident band at one point, The Andy Wardough band that was accompanied by dancers. The manager of the Fiesta during the 70's was a man called Frank Pickering. There was a boxer by the name of Ronnie Crookes who was the much feared doorman. The bar staff were made to pull half pints into pint glasses whilst the acts were on, so that when it got busy between acts it was quicker to pull the pints for the customers !! One of the beers served was 'Camerons' and it's reported to not have tasted very nice ! Food was chicken in a basket, with lettuce and tomato or scampi and chips. (waitress service too) The club itself was very dark, with much of the only light coming from the lamps on the tables ! There's some people who have told us that there used to be telephones on each table too and you could call other tables up with them ? (can anyone confirm this ?) There was a hypnotist that played the club regularly - Martin St James who was a small man with a goatee beard who used to have a clinic just off high street. Guest dreamboy
THE FIESTA CLUB My father Jim Lipthorpe and his brother Keith were the owners. I was about 10 at the time. The Christmas pantomimes were brilliant. I had to stay back stage out of sight, but I remember the panic one night when Freddy Starr was refusing to go onstage because of depression/ mental illness/whatever. People were slow hand clapping and demanding their money back but eventually he did go on about an hour late and brought the house down! I watched from a little peep hole at the back! I have the full set of Sheffield Fiesta magazines somewhere in my attic. I'll dig them out sometime!

Guest ozgirl
My Mum was a 'Fiesta Fawn' and she worked on the wine bar wearing a waist coat half black and half red she was the youngest fawn at only just 18. To get a job as a fawn you had to pass a initiation test and carry 12 full pints of beer on a tray with one hand but my mum nearly didnt get a job because a couple of days before she was invoved in a car accident and broke her wrist but lucky for her she was right handed and if she didnt get the job me and my 2 sisters wouldnt be here today because my dad also worked there as the second chef and thats how they met each other. She used to send pints down in the dun waiter and my dad would send up mint choc chip ice cream (Her favorite). Heres a few Names of people she remembers , Pauline on reception, Sue Mather, Noey first chef (Long time friend of the family), Pat Bennett, Pat M'c dusky and Terry Clayton. It would be nice to hear from you. Hi just caught up with this thread, great to read as it does just take you back! What was your mums name? I am Pauline from reception and have nothing but great memories of those days. Taking bookings and marking off on large sheets of paper, praying for no double bookings on full nights (no computers in those days), keeping spare seats at top of stairs just in case VIP,s came in. Worked with Jackie Bearder, Yvonne, Sue Coxon, Michelle (ballroom dancer) , Margaret (married Larry from Terrys band) so many others whose names I will recall eventually! Still keep in touch with Carole Fox (payroll), and I now live in Australia but come back as often as I can. Ah the good old days eh!!!

Guest dragoncd
My sister was called Carol Jeffries back in those days and was in charge of payroll. Maybe your sister remembers her. I started working at the Fiesta in 1976 as a waitress and worked there for a year or two then moved on to Baileys. The Fiesta waitresses uniforms changed to red halter neck catsuits. The manager then was a guy called Terry Pickering and the resident band was the Andy Wardough band. Amongst the people that appeared there were, Roger de Courcey, Sacha Distel, Jonny Ray, The Barron Knights, Martin St James and Alvin Stardust! Oh and remember well Jim Davidson appearing there straigh after winning New Faces.
Tinkerbell
.I Apparantly the guy who was the compere at the Fiesta in 1972/73 is the chap who sings the theme tune to the BBC soap Neighbours ! This is the first time I have replied to comments on the Fiesta. Hope I'm doing it right. The guy who sang the theme tune for the BBC soap Neighbours was Tony Hatch with his wife Jackie Trent. They wrote it. Tony also was one of the Judges on New Faces. The acts that were on New Faces and booked for the Fiesta also went on Bailey's circuit. Most of the caberets that were at the Fiesta did the Bailey's circuit. The Nolans were a brillliant act at Bailey's but I'm surprised they didn't get to play the Fiesta. The one act that I wanted to see at the Fiesta was Dave Allen. My boyfriend was asked to work his night off so he couldn't take me. My boyfriend ,Derek was the Assistant Stage Manager of Bailey's and later became the Stage Manager so he used to get us in the Fiesta free. Brill. There were a few times he was called over to the Fiesta to do their caberet. I married Derek. Happy times.

Guest gill smith
There were 'Fiesta Fawns' - does anyone know what these are ? (bar staff/waitresses/dancers ?) They wore little purple dresses and silver fishnet tights. Later this was changed to red plastic hot pants and white plastic boots. Also Marc Bolan and his band T-Rex were booked to play at the Fiesta for one night. When they saw the place they refused to play, saying that the Fiesta was too grand and not the sort of place they played at ! The next day Marc Bolan was on a panel show on Radio Sheffield with local DJ Ray Stuart and spoke of the night before's happenings.. Bolan stated that the booking contract had stipulated a maximum entry fee of ten bob, but he had found that the Fiesta was charging much more, and so he pulled out. They called mini-meal waitresses and drinks waitresses Fiesta fawns , when it first opened , mini meals had black wet look dresses silver sandals and silver fishnet tights , drinks waitresses wore purple silk dresses, silver fishnet tights, and silver sandals we then had black hot pants and white lace ruffle tops and white plastic boots,

Guest gill smith
Oh the good old days in the Fiesta I come down from Middlesbrough to work in the club when it first opened with Yvonne better known as Von Von some of the acts missed of the lists are Love Lace Watkins: he stayed in the Hallam Hotel The Four Tops: Lulu & the Brothers: Harper Brothers: [now Cannon and Ball] Don Crocket Comedian, he made the big time in Los Vegas {sadly he died great entertainer] Foundations: Vanity Fair: Dustan Gee: Comedian [he was great and a really nice bloke to meet] Dave Allen: [comedian loved his Irish mist liquor] Des O’Conner: [yes he sang] Max Bygreaves: A great trouper had a great sense of fun] Kenny Rogers and the First Edition: The list can go on but I know that I enjoyed working in the Fiesta it was more like a family outing than going to work. Being a stranger in Sheffield at the time the people made me feel welcome as did the members of staff a real friendly place. I am left with very happy memories of the early days in the club. I worked at the club Fiesta all the time it opened we were all one happy family , we got down to working when it was busy , and when a big act was on it was really busy it was like another world, seeing all acts at first there was 2 supporting acts before the main act

Edmund
My first visit to the Fiesta was probably 1972 - I'd be 12 or 13 and went with a schoolfriend, Sean Bonnington, whose father worked in the control box. We went on a Saturday dinnertime and watched a German Umpah band complete with lederhosen, from the control box. I was more impressed with the lighting controls, especially the disc full of coloured oils that projected onto the curtains, and with the schnapps that was handed round. My next visits would be a few years later, Johnny Ray and the Glenn Miller Band, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Guest Tigeratplay
I always think about the famous people that played at this club when I walk up the steps between what was the Fiesta and the NCP car park. Not the best of short cuts, but this old lad is a nostalgic one!
