I just got one of these this morning, I did click on the link, but the site it took me to looked dodgy it sent alarm bells ringing so I did not click to download the software. I also have up to date Mcafee running so was not convinced that I had any sort of bug.

Perhaps we should stress these are sent via the PM system within the forum, and your email addresses have not been compromised in any way. You received an email alert because you asked to be notified when a PM arrived.

We like to wobble on about SheffieldHistory; we provide pictures of places long gone, find people lost in the mists of time and do maps, churches, pubs, transport rally and silly looking charabancs.

We do not mess about with your computer or, indeed, provide badly worded scary messages.

I think SteveHB will post details about AVG Anti-virus product (for your information), I use it (its free) and, touch wood, I've never had a problem with a virus in the last 15 years. Now, the Manzon virus that was a beauty ...

Hi Sando who did you email?

This was not a breach of security as such, a rogue member registered, purely to send personal messages to other members to cause havoc.

If you received an email at the time this was a response from the site informing you that you had a personal message. This can be amended in your email settings within "my Controls"

At no time was email information compromised.

Again I will say, everybody must re-alise the importance of Internet security and think before clicking on dubious links.

If at anytime you are unsure there is usually a moderator logged onto the site, send him/her a pm they will be please to help or advise.

I also had this and reported it to admin. But a little common sense by googleing the site the link told me to go to confirmed my suspicions.I think it can only harm your pc if you install the software it tells you too.Any antivirus can scan a pc for nasty things,If you have any doubts search on google (But dont go on the site look at other ones such as forums)and have a snoop.

Good advice, we allow text, word, pdf, rtf, jpg files etc but not executable files and not even the uploading of Excel files. Don't download and certainly don't install anything you are not sure about; if it was that good, surely you'd have heard of it or been recommended via a reliable source.

I thought I had contacted yourselves, my Mcaffe picked up the potential Trojan, so no harm done, but worrying that it apeared so simple to infiltrate the site.

Here we go Richard.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, version 9.0

Make sure that you read carefully before clicking on any boxes

otherwise you could end up installing the Premium Edition and that would require a payment.

Here's another freebee ..

Comodo Internet Security, Firewall and AntiVirus, version 3.14

There is absolutely no virus on anyone's PC or this site - it's simply a spammer who registered on the site and decided to try and PM everyone with a panic message

Ignore/Delete

I've secured the site in the meantime

AVG is good, however they are quite good at hiding the free version and leading you to the pay for version, well they are a commercial company and somebody must subsidise the free version we all use. so yes highly recommended

Of course there are loads of other free and paid for pieces of antivirus software.

Basically you choose which one is going to suit you best.

They are all pretty good and do what they claim, - protect your computer against nasties.

However we cannot overemphasis, -

1)

Any antivirus program is better than none at all. Without it you really do leave your system open to attack

2)

Common sense and vigilance are always as important as the software used to protect you.

Never reply to unsolicited email that you don't know who sent it

Never click on links which you are unsure of or have your suspicions about

Always keep your personal details secure.

Sorry you had to waste your time Carol. 'Sicko' isn't quite the word the Admins were using yesterday trying to sort it out! Thanks for being understanding.

It's a trojan virus i think but you will only get it if you visit the site and install the dodgy virus scanner remover thing it tells you to.I seems to be doing its rounds on lots of forums.Just don't ever click links and p.m a member of admin for clarification if you are unsure.
