I drew this graph a while back for a Wikipedia article. It's mostly from census data.

From 1700 to 1843 the area covered is the Parish of Sheffield. After 1843 the area covered is that of the Borough of Sheffield, which gained City status in 1893. This was equivalent to the area of the former Parish of Sheffield until 1900. Arrowheads indicate the dates at which the boundaries of the city were significantly extended.

The answer to my (unasked) question is 1890-1900 i.e. when was the fastest growth, I'm surprised, would have thought that occured earier. Thank you again.

I was surprised by that too. Though most of my Sheffield ancestors arrived in the city in the second half of the 19th century, so I guess that they fit with the trend.

I'd have put your last dollar on the 1860's.
