vox
Link to The Lantern Theatre Website "The Lantern Theatre, originally known as the Chalet Theatre, was built as a private theatre by William Webster. He lived in a large adjoining property in Priory Road and the land on which the theatre stands was used for his carriage and horses. The part of the building now used for the dressing room, wardrobe and scenery store was Mr Webster's stable and coach house. However, by the 1950's the theatre had fallen into disuse and the neglected building rose from a forest of undergrowth. It was Dilys Guite, an actress and drama teacher, who approached the then owner, Charles Richardson, with a view to restoring it. In May 1957 a nominal rent was agreed and Dilys and her small group embarked on their mammoth task. Mr Richardson was so impressed with their enthusiasm and sheer hard work that he presented the theatre to the players in memory of his wife, Annie." Guest Snook
Hi there, Does anyone have any info on The Lantern Theatre? In particular we'd like to find out what date the theatre was actually built. I've recently been told it is the oldest theatre in Sheffield and would really like to find a way to confirm that. It was built between 1891 and 1901 and we have been given various dates of 1898, 1895 and 1893 as the build date. Thanks! www.lanterntheatre.org.uk
Bayleaf
According to the Pevsner guide it was 1893, they don't quote their source, but they're usually correct!

Guest skeets
HI Steve, This topic brought back memmories,it was aprox;1945 or thereabouts, before l was married, we were in a mixed group in some pub in town possibly the Rainbow, somebody came in dishing free tickets for the Lantern Theatre, we were off, and the driver of the car l was in did not know where it was,l knew cos l had worked on Priory Rd, when we were there l was begining to feel ill with the booze and stayed outside, by the time l was feeling better it was over apparently it had just been a forerunner of what was to come, that was my lackluster account of the Lantern at the time, l don't recall hearing of it again. I certainly hope that is true, it would make it Sheffield's oldest theatre! http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1246500

Cheers Skeets. Was it some kind of opening event? The theatre was reopened in 1957 after being closed since the 1920's. We recently has someone tell us they used to play inside the theatre during the Second World War when it was left empty. The Police locked it all up in the 1950's as they believed it was unsafe.
