Sheffield co-op's

Only me

Recommended Posts

There was an S&E Co-Op that stood on the top end of Myrtle Road (S2) that also had it's own butchers department,

it closed down around 1968/9 to become Bradshaw's general store and the butchery department became a hair dressers.

The building was recently demolished and flats have now been built on the site.

Was that a CO-OP on the corner of Greystones Rd and Ecclesall Rd

The S&E Co-op had an electrical store at the bottom of The Moor

The department was later moved to the Arcade and this shop became the YEB showroom.

There was one at the bottom at the junction with Ecclesall road, I think there was also one in the shops opposite the highcliffe pub, and there was also one on Ecclesall road at Banner cross, the building now occupied by the opticians.

S&E does stand for "Sheffield and Ecclesall" doesn't it?

An S&E branch in Bakewell

Begs the question how far can you travel out of Sheffield and still find a branch of either S&E or B&C Co-Op

I think Bakewell is the furthers S&E, but there was a B&C in Tideswell, both could have been independant societies that merged with their larger neighbours

Well salt my tatties, the very one!

Well found Steve

My mum & dad bought me a radio cassette player from there for Christmas 1973. It was an Elizabethan, Model LZ510.

Long gone, but funny how these things, like number plates, stick in your mind. lol

Seems strange that you mention the radio cassette player,

as I purchased a Sony Walkman from the same building roundabout the mid 80's (I think).

It was bought during a closing down sale but I can not remember if it was a S&E or YEB store at the time?

PS: I did not have to look far for that photo .. www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums

Now student flats - before that an upholstery firm.

Just took some photos today but I can't get them on the computer yet.

I'll edit them in when I can.

(It's actually Walkley Road and Bole Hill Road. Road names are a bit confusing around there.

There was another S&E on Walkley, but I cannot remember the name of the road, it was a road that ran paralel with the main road Howard Road/ South Road, Could have been Walkley Street.

Taplin Road Garage, run for many years by a chap called Hollingsworth, was on the other side of the road almost opposite the end of Hillsborough Place where I lived for a while.

I should have known, though its a long time since I was last down there, 1962 in fact. My dads uncle had another bump in his car on the way back from work, Taplin garage towed it in and told him it was a right off. Uncle could not believe this so he asked me to go down to have look at it, as it turned out it was not, but behind uncles back auntie had asked Mr Hollingsworth to tell him it was, she said it was the only way to get him to stop driving before he killed someone. W/E.
