From SHEFFIELD FLOOD CLAIMS Link

Brickmakers and the Refractory Industry

In 1864 brickmaking was already established at two sites on the south bank of the upper Loxley, facing the water wheels at Storrs Bridge and Old Wheel. Clay pits are marked on the 1855 O.S. map; the flood claims prove that the owners had progressed from the extraction of ‘pot clay’ to the manufacture of finished bricks. At Storrs Bridge, T. Marshall and W. Crapper obtained just over £1600 in recompense for stores of pot clay, punch wood and ‘other woods used in the trade’. There were also brick moulds and tram rails washed away. The loss in output was calculated at 30,000 bricks a week. (4802)

T. Wragg was a clay merchant and fire brick maker with a smaller output; he lost bricks spoiled in the making and wooden and brass brick moulds. (1478)

Two other local firms suffered transport problems, requiring three horses instead of two for the longer, steeper journey into Sheffield whilst Malin Bridge was down. (5990; 6390)

By 1851 there were 14 brickpits around Sheffield, growing to 32 in 1893. These were on the edge of the town, but as it expanded they were overrun, and new workings started further out.
The 1851 OS map shows 2 'brick crofts' near the bottom of Ecclesall Rd. As the city expanded, works were established by John Gregory on Abbeydale Rd and Ecclesall Rd, the latter on what is now the site of Somerfields supermarket near Banner Cross. There's an aerial photo on Picture Sheffield.

There was also the Hangingwater Brick Company, whose works were on Hangingwater Rd, opposite the present allotments. It was there from 1901 to 1915.

From map 53

Marriott Wood Brick Works:

I have vague memories of them blowing up the chimney when they built the Sainsbury's that's there now.

Hi,

These works, kilns, etc. belonged to Pickford Holland in the early 1950's. Don't know how long they stayed in business at this location.

Believe Pickford Holland also had a works/mine on the A621? road between Totley and Owler Bar

The last entry on the list (William Henry Wragg/Thomas Wragg & Sons etc.) did have a presence on Stanley Street but it was only a sales office and small depot. The building and yard was still there last year but no longer in use.

Re the proposed Woodseats/Dronfield trolleybus route. Picturesheffield shows a brickworks on the site of what is now Morrisons at Meadowhead, just how many brickworks have there been in Sheffield and has anyone any photos ? W/E.

I have tried to upload a 'zipped' (if that's the correct term) file of photographs of the brick kiln of SBCo still partly remaining on Aizlewood Road, 3,298kB, I don't know whether that's more or less than 2MB, let alone if that's the problem, but the uploading doesn't seem to be able to happen. Two single pix did get uploaded, but they do not seem to become visible on the Forum? Evidently, the technology of all this is beyond me. There's pictures of the inside of the Aizlewood RD kiln in Stephen Myers' book about the car industry in Sheffield: Richardson cars were produced on the site after SBCo had left.

Anyone have better photo's?
