Guest al_linfit
Researching my family history in the 1911 census I've found two great uncles One's occupation is a' Firer Axle Hammer Furnace' in a Steelworks The other is a 'Stuffender Axle Hammer Furnace' A 'Firer' seems fairly obvious but anybody any ideas what a 'Stuffender' did ? Ponytail
No "Stuffender" listed in "A Glossory of Old Sheffield Trade Words and Dialect" compiled and edited by B. Ronald Dyson MA 1936 Reprinted 1979. Nearest I can find "Scummer" a Fire Shovel. Perhaps he had something to do with shoveling. Hopefully an exSteelworker could enlighten.
Lysanderix
In hand rolling mills one member of the team was often known as a “ backer or back ender”…..he put the hot billet back into the cogging rolls to further reduce its size. Stuffing is ….well ,filling something up….we “stuff “shipping containers….so I imagine the stuffender could be a member of a forging or rolling mill team who “stuffed” the billet into the appropriate pass on the mill train…..Just a guess🥺🥺🥺
