Picture of Seahorse Stonework taken in Sheffield.

Can you guess where this is? Chances are that if you've lived in Sheffield then you've passed this many, many times.

Well played.

I'm trying to find out why it is there? Bit of an unusual representation.

Can't find anything so far - any ideas?

Just done a bit of web research and I can find no reference to that particular carving :(

More I look at the picture more it looks like a cross between a dragon & a seahorse mmm

No correct guesses other than GrinderBloke who PM'd me the correct answer.

This brilliantly carved Sea Horse actually appears on the keystone of the doorway to the Town Hall!

Still can't find any reasoning as to why the designer would have carved a Sea Horse into the dorrway of the Town Hall of Sheffield!

Dragons are used to represent the elements Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

The reliefs either side of the dragon, Steam and Electricity need these elements to function.

Some more pictures here ..... F W Pomeroy

Thats my theory anyway, deejayone
