Guest Trefcon
It shows we can still make 'things'. I was looking for an 'heavy haulage movement' type thing, along the lines of the 'Steam Movement' schedules, but cant find owt.
DaveH
It shows we can still make 'things'. I was looking for an 'heavy haulage movement' type thing, along the lines of the 'Steam Movement' schedules, but cant find owt. Moving big heavy stuff by steam traction engine was one of their main uses. At rallies we regularly used to demonstrate, and see demonstrated mamoth feats of heavy haulage. Sheffield and Cromford have "the hill", a stteep incline which a traction engine will pull a massive load of around 70 tons (frequently a "train" of other vehicles on drawbars). At one time when Frank Lythgoe was using engines he would pull his 6 showmans engines with an all up weight of around 100 tons with his 7th engine. At Stamford rally, situated next to a concrete works an engine would haul a flatbed trailer around which had been "loaded" with heavy concrete slabs to whatever weight the engine owner thought he could manage, - frequently up to 100 tons. At Sheffield and Elvaston Castle a miniature scale traction engine of quarter, third or half scale would be used to pull up to 3 full sized traction engines around, - a diminutive engine hauling about 50 tons! As impressive as these demonstrations are, they are obviously done in modern surroundings and don't have the aura of steam traction heavy haulage in its heyday as depicted in images like this one.
