My sister had a holiday job as a nanny for the Harrisons around 1963-1965. They had a large stone built house somewhere just outside Sheffield which I went to once but can't remember much more than that.

I remember Kennings on Peel Street and on Ashgate Road (I was born in no 8) the open days when Rolls Royce released a new model and the celebs who would turn up! the Peel Street building became a cheap type supermarket and the Ashgate Road garage the head office for a local charity, the Peel Street supermarket is now long gone and offices and a pub have replaced them. Does anyone remember the back to backs with courts which were on the opposite side of Peel Street?

As an aside my Grandfather was friends with the original Mr Kenning who offered him a stake in his new business idea, my Grandfather turned him down in favour of property purchasing! if only eh??

I was there when it was the Rolls Distributorship. One time I was stood in the reception area when in came Rick Wakeman - he was staying at the Hallam Towers and was out with one of the roadies "getting some fresh air" and they spotted the Rollers in the showroom. He asked me if it was ok if they had a look round. I just stood there agog - only the previous evening I had seen him at the City Hall and here he was, my keyboard hero, asking me if it was ok to look round. Of course I said yes, only to get a bollocking from the senior salesguy "for letting a couple of hippy types" into the showroom. No amount of explanation as to who Rick Wakeman was did any good. The following week Tony Christie came into the showroom to order his Rolls and was treated like royalty. (nice guy actually)

What places have you worked at in Sheffield that are no longer there ?

I used to work at 'Lodestar' Engineering on Johnson Street, where the new roadworks are STILL going on at the bottom of corporation st, a bit saddening really as there used to be 136 men worked there when I started there, some who had been there since they were 14!

They shared the same building with Trowbridge who ran a fleet of AEC trucks. I worked in the engine shop at Bentley Brothers on Saville Street and used to walk down that way every morning. Our foreman Harold Meager who was an ace on the lathe used to say, well if I can`t make one there is only one place that can, `LODESTAR`

First job was at Osbourn Mushett tools on Penistone road. I think the building is still there though.

Then on to Geo Turton Platts drop forge on I believe Furnival road. This place was demolished years ago. Other places I worked that are gone:

Spear & Jackson

Royal Hospital

Jessops Hospital.

Update to this is that the Osbourn Mushett building is now slated to come down. At least I got to see it again on my recent visit.

What about Daltons the leather goods place on Slalesmoor where they hand made leather purses.

Also Blanchards on Infimary Rd where your money went up that shoot to the office and your

change and receipt came back down.

My first job was at was it J.M. Bells or M. Bells around Arundel gate.

We made fancy gift boxes for cut glass, cutlery etc but I didnt stay long it wasn't for me but

I wonder is it still there?

In the sixties you could just wonder from one job to another if you didn't like it.

Anther place I remember is James Neills. Happy days.

Completely off the subject I know, but I can't help remembering that one famous critic described Mick Jagger as, "Having child bearing lips"!
Thanks for that, Docmel.
In a way Brady's did me a favour. It put me off tents for life. We did manage to sleep for one night in it. It ended up tied to a tree at one side and the car at the other. The biggest problem was that we were slap bang in the middle of the track from the local pub and we had a chaotic 10 minutes when the pub turned out at 11.30 and people started falling over our makeshift tent in the dark. Suddenly caravans seemed like the height of comfort and luxury.
Hi

I worked at Cockaynes in the tube room, where the tubes with cash in went and the change came back down.

My dad was a security man on the gatehouse at Moor and Wrights at Handsworth. Anyone remember the little gatehouse there?

Also Davisons Fancy Goods on Blonk Street. Now gone.
