My granddad had an allotment there from the 1940s to his death c 1959. No 48 I think it was. My father too had one no 19 then took over my granddads as well. I hated gardening back then - what a changed woman I am now- but we would all have to go down at holiday times and weekends supposedly to help. My sisters would make mud pies while I stood around trying to avoid spiders and worms. Often we would have to walk down and take dad an old tizer bottle full of tea - couldn't afford thermos flasks then. He would sell excess veg and flowers to neighbours. Often the gate to the allotment would open while we were there on a Sunday and someone would come in asking for flowers to buy either for their wives or to put on graves. It was quite a community then. Anyone finding bones in no 48 garden - it was Patch our pet dog who was run over by a bus and granddad took him up there on a wheelbarrow buring him under the compost heap c1950.
