Button making was already well established in Birmingham and London and possibly started around 1650 in Sheffield as a sideline during the frequest times of recession.

In the 1720's buttons were in use as gambling counters.

A Lease (1693) from the Charity Trustees of Sheffield to John Goodwin, buttonmaker, Isle of Wight (near Bridge Street)

'encompassed round with the River Dun'

1714 Samuel Hall, plate buttonmaker had as premises the parlour section of a cottage near Townhead.

May 1727 John Hall, buttonmaker of Bradway Moor had in an inventory a mare, a few cattle and corn sown on the ground.

1734 Thomas Renshaw, buttonmaker had a cottage and smithy near Leaveygreave.

1744 John Staniforth, buttonmaker, Hillbridge, Nether Hallam - leasing a tenement, barns, orchard and gardens (11 acres).

Button makers, like Cutlers sold via local factors or merchants e.g. Samuel Watson of Sheffield declared bankrupt in 1707. His stock of goods inclded cloth, gloves, socks and buttons :

brass coat buttons, tin, glass, horn and thread buttons; lacquered and silver buttons (silver buttons 8/- a Gross); 'silver spangled buttons' 1d each; five gross of 'oakarmy' (alcony) buttons 7s 6d.

Alcony similar to pinchbeck, apparently.

212 button Trade records ready to post when I can get around the formatting problem.

Holy Buttons Batman

The Holy family provided three generations of buttonmakers, later they became Merchants.

Daniel Holy, buttonmaker was leasing an ancient subdivided dwelling at West Bar from the Capital Burgesses in 1734.

Daniel's son, Thomas Holy had premises at Newfield Green, Heeley in 1750; the house, smithy and workchambers were rebuilt in July and August 1751. Thomas died in 1758 leaving Sarah, his wife, to carry on. Premises mention at this time include smithies, a cellar, a casting shop, the chamber of the casting plots and a 'rubbing' smithy'. Buttons valued at £233-14s-5 1/2d including

oval yellow coats,

spatterdash buttons,

lacquered Birmingham coat butons,

silvered, figured, pearl, brass and buttons made of yellow material.

Some are listed by number e.g. thin tens (coats)

flat fours, flat sixteens (coat)

flat twos (breast).

Sarah died in 1768.

March 1771 partnership formed between Thomas Newbould, shearsmith, George Woodhead, Merchant and Sarah's son Thomas (under 21 at the time). They leased premises on Sheffield Moor (formerly a bowling green or skittle alley).

By 1787 the firm occupied a prominent position amongst the Sheffield makers of metal, gilt and plated buttons.

1790 Thomas Holy marries Elizabeth Beard.

1793 the old partnership agreement had expired, a new partnership was formed with Newbould, Holy and George Suckley as general merchants (Sheffield Moor)
