Nurses Home at Ecclesfield

Sheffield History

Recommended Posts

The Nurses Home at Ecclesfield was built in 1901 to the memory of Thomas William Jeffcock JP. He was a local mining engineer who died in 1900. Originally it was always a home for two nurses who gave their time and nursing free to the sick and ailing. It has been a private residence for around forty years - indeed it still is. There are two other monuments to the memory of T W Jeffcock in the village. The Jeffcock Fountain stands in Ecclesfield Park. Sadly over the years it has been allowed to decay. Originally it stood at the top of Church Street, inside a niche in the churchyard wall. The horse trough in the churchyard is also a memorial to Mr Jeffcock. This originally stood opposite The Arundel Inn/Cinema House on The Common, Ecclesfield.

When I was at school in the 1970's a lad at school lived there - his dad was the local milkman!
