I'd totally forgotten about those buildings!

Used to go past them every day on the bus, and yes, I think they've gone.

Shame, I fancied a pint in Ye Olde Hloe in the Wall with all the ghosties!

Nice photos.

Good to see pictures of the top of Savile Street. We lived at 46 (next to Bentley Brothers car showroom) until I was 11 and we moved to Winn Gardens (in 1963) where my mother still lives. We were caretakers of Henry Matthews wood yard and my Grandad was a salesman there. I've posted some photos (I hope they work - first time I've done this) I have taken over the past 2 years showing the Hole in the Wall (was it called Wicker Brewery in my day - can't remember) and the rear of the woodyard. The gap you see on to the Don was where the Bailey Bridge was. My mother tells me that this was the first Bailey Bridge (used in the war) to be located (I think Mr Bailey - the inventor - came from Rotherham) She used it to cross over to the arches on Effingham Road she shared with the family and Matthews horse during the blitz! My name is David Watkins and I attended Ellesmere Road school until 1963 when I started at High Storrs. Would love to hear from anyone who knows me. This site is more addictive than e-bay. Even more late nights. Great stuff. I will post some school pix when i find out where to post them. (I'm sure someone will tell me lol)

oops, hello - been a while since i've been on, but thanks for the warm welcome.

Don't know if it actually was haunted - but it looks the ideal spot!

Heres another pic of the Hole in The Wall pub. Taken about 1982!!

Great stuff, I visited here in its dying days, a "Women-friendly" pub at that time, still have the raised floor and the pool table to the back of the main room, and the imaginary picture of a view of Sheffield, as viewed through a "hole in the wall" as caused by enemy bombing (or enemy boobing, spontaneous attacks by comedy-breasts) ... probably ....

Some crackin photo's there.

We often read these novels or biographies of the so called perfect childhood environment.

To be raised on…

“The coast” swimming in the sea, hide-n-seek in the sand dunes.

Or in …..

“The country” running though the fields, playing in the haystacks.

But to a child of the 50s, a product of the baby boom, there was never so, a more exciting a place on this earth than the bombed out buildings of Sheffield.

They were dangerous places, but as a child we knew nothing of danger, but only of fun and excitement.

We may have been poor and scraggy; by today’s standards, but we were happy, well! I was.

On the other side of the arches was the Bull and Oak or was it Spear and the Brown Cow. I remeber the beer in the Brown Cow being excellent.

I worked in The Brown Cow 20 years ago when Phyllis and Trevor Edgerton had it. The Wicker was a brilliant ,boozers paradise in those days.

I went to Trevors funeral.

Trevor and Phyllis was great

and i went in there before they took over.

then they took over the Bull and Oak for a while.

me and the girls went down the Wicker come wind, hail,or snow, every friday night

and what a great night we all had, without fail.

for about 30yrs we did the wicker walk.

well started off in the Penny black, at 7ish. then made our way down the wicker..

ended up in the station.around 10.30 ish..

till they pulled the pubs down

all the best pubs are going slowly.

"A Woman-friendly pub" That brings back memories. When I drove for Coachline I Took a party of females to a rally in London. When I picked them up in Pond Street it was only then I found out what kind of rally they were going to. As it happened they were a friendly lot and everyone had a good day, when we got back to Sheffield most of them asked to be dropped off at the above pub. I found out later that they had asked for a female driver, but none of them would volunteer.
