Agreed, nicely written. Don't miss the extended set of photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/infinitethoug...57621245446115/

The photos are exactly the sort of thing I had in mind when I suggested recording the market interior before it "disapppears"

Don't really need to bother now as long as we keep that link in to this excellent collection.

And the collection stays online [Gleadless.net :( ]

Perhaps I should download a "backup copy" of all the pictures to cover that eventuality

We are still missing copies of most of the stuff that was on gleadless.net

What do they always warn you about computers, - ALWAYS MAKE A BACK UP COPY OF ALL YOUR DATA ;-)

The Photo is of the rear of The Castle Market leading to the loading bay and circling down ramp onto the street of Ladies Bridge. As you are looking towards the meat market and you can also see the stairs leading to the retail section of the Castle Market.

Welcome to Sheffield History jamesh2o and thank you for your imput.

I assume that you are refering to my first of the 4 Minox pictures from 1982 and i think that you are correct, if so my later 2then & now comparison shot should match it up.

Christmas comes to Castle Market.

The market puts its decorations and lights up. I hope this is not going to be the markets last ever Christmas.

Not exactly Then & Now, but each of these pictures lends itself to a "Christmas and not Christmas" picture

Time seems to be running out for the market as more and more stalls become shuttered up so there is a need to get a sizeable collection of pictures of the place before it finaly goes for historical posterity.

I am sure that even those members who can't wait to see the market go would agree with this.

It is not the easiest place to take pictures in, mainly because it is busy with people milling about everywhere getting their shopping, it is cluttered with stuff in a small space as markets often are so you can't get the best viewpoint and the lighting in there is notoriously bad as it is quite dark but illuminated signs appear in shot increasing the contrast range and risk of glare.

To make matters worse, as I go there to do shopping and not take pictures I am usually snapping pictures on my mobile phone rather than a better, dedicated camera.

However, I am determined that we should have a large collection of pictures of it before it goes.

Previous pictures were of course in the "meat and fish" market

Here are a couple from the other part of the market where most of the current closures seem to have taken place with shuttered stalls.

So far there appears to be no stall closures in the meat and fish market at all.

A few more pictures, captured for posterity, whilst out shopping in the market this weekend.

I suppose mobile phones with cameras can come in handy.

Hi It is Harringtons ,I used to own the Soda Fountain 1970s to 1984 opposite near the punch biscuite store they were great times

After a second visit I am now drawn back to thinking that the Richard Hawley cover IS Harringtons, although Iam still not 100% sure.

The other shop which looks very similar to the one on the Hawley cover is exclusively girls and womens clothing when I walked past it again. I can't remember its name but it has a girls name and may even be called "Miss" something or other, whatever the name is.

The clothing on display on the Hawley cover picture does NOT appear to be exclusively female and for this reason I still think it could be Harringtons.

I was unable to find locations to match either my 3rd minox picture (M. Atkins) or my 4th minox picture (Carters?) so I can only assume that these traders are no longer in business and their former stalls are now being run by someone else.

William (Wm.) Atkin was my dad, who owned the fish and poultry stall.

Dad's stall was located in the centre of the market, as can be seen on this pic:

Here's a useful floorplan of Castle Market for you guys:

Welcome to Sheffield History Yggdrasil and thank you for this brilliant first post.

A confirmation of some missing photo information, some additional photos of the market added, and then that absolute Gem, a floor plan of the markets.

We need to make a copy of these floor plans from the Council Markets Department as the market isn't going to be around for much longer is it?

I've popped the Castle Market floorplan into my public DropBox folder, and I'll leave it there permanently for all who'd like a copy of it.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/zmnplhq044lbdtx/Castle%20Market%20Floorplan%20%28PDF%2C%203.44MB%29.pdf

WOW!!!

By the strangest of coincidence I have got a new Smartphone this weekend and to transfer data on and off it it has a DropBox app.

At the time you were posting this I was actually setting up my own DropBox account to use on the phone. Now that I have a DropBox account I will be able to log in and get a copy of the floor plan from your public folder.

Once again, many thanks for this.

Lower ground floor, Castle Bakery, stall 174, telephone 29728

What stuff we remember!!

Now that we have a floor plan, what about trying to put names to the stalls? I'll have a think anyway and see what I come up with.

I had thought of doing this, but as the stalls changed ownership and business over time (not all market trading stallholders were long term and stayed there for several generations of the same family, - although some of the better known ones did) we would need to put a date to the names on the stalls.

Castle Market opened in 1963, so I suppose the 1960's would have been it's heyday.

I have a few photos here that I've scanned from Dad's old 35mm slides. A few of the stallholders knew he was a photographer and asked him to take a snap of their stalls. These were taken, I think, in the late 60s.

I've stamped a copyright symbol on them in case someone lifts them from a google search, but if anyone would like the originals for personal use, I'll pop them on Dropbox.

2. Stall number 5, possibly Mr Burkinshaw?

3. I think this fella's name was Mr G. Hurst

4.Presumably Mr Walter Green's stall?
