ukelele lady
Updated my list for 1845 (438 keepers goes up to 492). St Philips Tavern, I have Richard Brinnen, 228 St Philip's Road in 1845; also 1846 when Richard's address seems to be 92 St Philips Road. Probably all one and the same with John Burgin having the place before Richard. I aslo have Richard Brinnen from the White 1845 directory with the address as 92 St Philips Road. Guest alygreenhalgh
Hi, In respect of Mason's Arms, Pearl Street, Sheffield. Just wanted to let you know that Margaret Hawke was married to John Hawke and he was the Publican of the Mason's Arms in 1865 as shown on his daughters marriage certificate. I am guessing he must have died between 1865 and 1871 for your records to show Margaret Hawke as Landlady in 1871. I can also confirm that in the 1861 Census he is shown as Beerhouse Keeper with the address as 49 Pearl Street. I hope this is useful to you. Guest alygreenhalgh
Hi again... In respect of the White Lion, 30 Bailey Street, please be advised that in 1891 and shown as "Bar Retailer" was John Donovan who was married to Emma Hawke (her parents had been publicans of the Mason's Arms, Pearl Street), Interestingly in the 1881 Census he is shown as Licensed Victualler and Accountant but was residing at 57 Bailey Street with no pub name mentioned. I confirm your find in the 1861 Census so Ukelele Lady can update that year in the A-Z; I searched for a year of passing for John; I believe this occured in Apr-Jun 1869 (based on 1813 year of birth and Ecclesall Bierlow); so on my listing I will extend John's tenure from 1861-1869. Welcome to the Site, I hope you find much of interest here. If you can supply any more Pub-related details I/we would be delighted to follow such data up to improve the listings. Thanks again, I agree with your 1891 find for 30 Bailey Street, however, it does say "Beer retailer". One for Ukelele Lady and the A-Z (if not already there). 57 Bailey Street is the Seedling or Green Seedlings, John Donovan known there 1876-1889 which fits just fine. also, for your information some previous mention of Bailey-street and Bailey-fields http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=3949&hl=bailey on that link.
