RichardB
A true "labour of love", a magnificent effort Ukelele Lady. The list, with your effort, has become a great resource not only for old-soaks like me but for people looking for family members and for those with an interest in the old boozers of Sheffield in years gone by. On behalf of everyone - a big Thank you. Get your cards done and take a break ... who knows what's next !?! And that's that. If I've made any blunders I'm sure you'll let me know. then I can correct them. There are one or two names that are a bit unreadable which I will check on at the library tomorrow with any other unsures. I think I'll start making my Christmas cards now. vox
Just noticed this anomaly From HERE we have: 8th May 1890 Huber (engineer) versus Cattanagh, landlord of the Maunche Hotel, Action for assault and ejectment. Damages £10. And also, Commercial Gazette July 1890 says: Cattanagh W. Ross, Maunche Hotel, Sheffield Whereas on the Keepers List we have: Maunche 14 Corn Exchange Buildings 1889 Henry Woods [ manager ] 1890 - 91 Edward Twivey 1893 Edward Twivey
ukelele lady
Hi Vox I have on the Kelly's 1890 Edward TURVEY but on the Whites 1891 it is Edward Twivey. I can only post what I find in the directories.
vox
Of course UkeLass. Now we have 3 options though, Turvey, Twivey and Cattanagh. Should we include all three names, showing the anomalies, and giving the references ?
ukelele lady
I believe the Turvey is one of the same [ Twivey] as mostly it is spelt Twivey. I think we should include the name Cattanagh as well, as it's there in the history news so he must belong somewhere in there.

vox
Done the A's and B's but I have some questions for anyone brave. Angel, Leonard Cowley, South-st. – is this new? Ball, Joseph Jowett, Bridge-bouses - Can't find - is this new ? Ball, Richard Brannand, Bridge-house*- Can't find - is this new ? Ball, Samuel Robins, Jehu-lane – Is this new ? Ball, George Chapman, Scotland-st. (also lists Ball, George Blisset, Grindlegate) Ball, John Wright, Sanspavours - is this new ? Ball, Hannah Marshall, Campo-lane (also lists Ball, Antepast Stevens, Campo-lane) Barrel, Sarah Pinder, Pond-lane - I've added this to Barrel - Little Pond St - Same surname, Pinder. Or Is this new ? Barley Mow, Jos. Goodlad, Westbar-green - is this new ? Black Jug, John Freeborough, Bridge-houses - is this new ? Black Swan, John Cricb, Snig-hill – Can’t edit the listing. Black Swan, Luke Stamford, Pond-lane – Is this the Little Pond Street one? (Stamford/Staniforth) Blue Boy, Joseph Stringer, Shudehill (Is it the Allen Street one, which also has a Joseph Stringer) Brittania, Samuel Yates, Trippet-lane – is this new ? RichardB
Angel, 14 Button Lane/18-22 South Street, Moor, Leonard Cowley there 1818-1829 Ball, 23 Oborne Street/2 Orborne/23 New Field Street/23 Newfield, Bridgehouses, Joseph Jowett 1818-1823 Ball, Richard Brannand, Bridge-house*- Can't find - is this new ? - Name not on my lists, unknown status Not Done Ball, Samuel Robins, Jehu-lane – Is this new ? Most likely Blue Bell, 13 Jehu Lane/Commercial Street, known to be open in 1820. Ball, George Chapman, Scotland-st. (also lists Ball, George Blisset, Grindlegate) - that is what I have, both names in 1818, though George Chapman is named 1821-1823 on my data. Ball, John Wright = Norfolk Arms, 18 Sands Paviours, Bow Street on my data there from 1822-1834. Edit: All above addressed apart from Richard Brannand
RichardB
Ball, Hannah Marshall, Campo-lane (also lists Ball, Antepast Stevens, Campo-lane) - mmm, complicated Ball, 26 Campo Lane, Antepast Stevens (actually Antipas) on my lists 1818-1828 but also Ball, 28 Townhead Street, Hannah Marshall 1818-1828, though listed with Henry Marshall in 1825 One to discuss further methinks, or wait on UKL and another opinion. RichardB
Barrel, Sarah Pinder, Pond-lane - I've added this to Barrel - Little Pond St - Same surname, Pinder. Or Is this new ? I have Sarah Pinder 1818 and Thomas Pinder from 1822 onwards, seemingly for forever. Barley Mow, Jos. Goodlad, Westbar-green - is this new ? - it is on my list Black Jug, John Freeborough, Bridge-houses - is this new ? - it is on my list Black Swan, John Cricb, Snig-hill – Can’t edit the listing. - John Crich Black Swan, Luke Stamford, Pond-lane – Is this the Little Pond Street one? (Stamford/Staniforth) - yes, 1 Little Pond street, or 15 or indeed maybe number 60, Staniforth is the spelling from 1822 onwards. Blue Boy, Joseph Stringer, Shudehill (Is it the Allen Street one, which also has a Joseph Stringer) - Shudehill and Allen Street seem quite some distance apart.Stringer definately at Blue Boy Street/Allen Street based on other data. Personally I would need a bit more convincing that there was a Blue Boy on Shudehill. Already have Golden Lion at number 2, Cross Keys, number 4, Lion and Lamb number 6 and the French Horn, number 7. Brittania, Samuel Yates, Trippet-lane – is this new ? It is on my list with Samuel as only named keeper (mine has an entry headed 1818-1820)
