I originally posted this one in the Then & Now Discussion topic, having completely forgotten that this thread existed.

A view of Midland Station and the Sheaf Street area from above the entrance to the short tunnel under Granville Street.

I waited what seemed like an age for a train to depart northbound from Platform 1 but nothing happened and I had to move on without a train in shot.

The date of the "then" shot is unknown, the now was taken by me on 9th August 2011.

There was a Newsums timber yard in Rotherham. Did they have a branch in Sheffield?

If so, until when ? I haven't found anything yet.

The lorry looks like 1960's to me. I think W.E. will be able to put a date and make to it.

And just for interest

I usually refer to Rail UK (www.railuk.info) for information on locomotives, but it isn't working at the moment, which is why my original caption was a bit vague :(.

So Newsums was there in 37 according to PicSheff

Still there it seems in the 50's according to the map.

So the photo was between 1950 and when Newsums was demolished.

I seem to remember that most of Harmer Lane was flat at about the same time as, or not long after the bus terminus was being altered.

There was a large open area where coaches stopped.

Edit

Here's a still from HERE a bit blurred but it seems to show that there were buildings on Harmer Lane in 1955/6
