DaveH
Before they all disappear! Added to main list. Just a reminder from post #1 in this thread. We need to take more pictures of old pub signs BEFORE they disappear. Just recently I have come across several boarded up out of business pubs with signs that look like this. Just in case you are wondering, this was the sign outside The Vulcan, Northern Avenue S2

DaveH
The Chantry, Chesterfield Road. Spelt wiithout the "e" on the sign, but with the "e" on the notice boards outside! According to Harold Armitage's definitive book "Chantrey Land" it should be spelt WITh the E (CHANTREY) So it would appear that the spelling on the notice boards (often done by bar staff who failed GCSE English at school) are correct BUT the pub sign itself is wrong. Wouldn't like to be the sign writer who made that sign if anyone ever spotted it in his lifetime. Chantrey himself wouldn't have noticed it as he died in the 1840's, a long time before the sign was made, even though it is clearly a picture of Chantrey on the sign. It is on the corner of Chantrey Road, as well. The large signs on the pub are wrong as well, as can be seen in Google Streetview

DaveH
It is on the corner of Chantrey Road, as well. The large signs on the pub are wrong as well, as can be seen in It says it's a Tetley's pub on the windows. Can't expect a Leeds based brewery to get the name of a historic local (to sheffield) characters name right can we. Had to laugh at the Google street view though. Notice how the Google security software has "blurred out" the (drawn artwork) face of Chantrey on the pub sign! lol

SteveHB
I note they call it "The Earl" now, its a pub I have never been in Always been known locally as 'The Earl' don't think it's a proper pub any more, keeps closing, changing hands, and no regular opening times, at one time it was some sort of community place. When I frequented the Earl (70's/80's), the landlord at the time was called Henry or Harry, sorry can't think of his second name? He was a former boxer, so I was told, he owned a race horse at the time that had blood connections to Red Rum, strangely I do remember the name of the horse, it was Red Earl. DaveH
I note they call it "The Earl" now, its a pub I have never been in It's OK Steve, Stuart is only saying that because he's fancying us going out there on a "recconasance" to see what it's like and sample a copious quantity of ale at the same time. lol
