This is the new sign of the Anvil at Stannington.

Call me old fashioned but I think I liked the old sign better.

Unfortunately I never took a picture of it before they took it down.

What this one ?.

Do you know which era this one were?

I'm sure the last one which they have now taken down had a workman on it doing his job.

I did notice only last month how very faded and sun bleach it was.

Or even "For Sale" as many of the closed pubs around our way, and there are a lot, are not on the market for being reopened as public houses but to reopened with change of use.

Quite a few of them seem to be altering to food outlets, either restraunts or take aways, for asian food (Indian, Chinese, Bangladeshi, etc)

If there is no future for these closed pubs as outlets for alcoholic drinks in a social group atmosphere any more then I can't see that restraunts and take aways will be any more successful.

However, I would rather see them is popular food outlets doing good business than just being stood empty and derelict.

Is that unusual, I would have thought almost every pub would have had a sign ? nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnbnnnnnnnnmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnp[55 <- Cat typing.

That's what I mean. I looked for a pub sign but it doesn't seem to have one unless I missed it.

Steve HB I Have course to remember this PUB Steve,66years ago my wife Betty and l had visited her parents in Alderson Rd and had called in the Sheaf, and was in a quandary over where to live, as l had left my parents home saying l would not return, at that time some seats were back to back and a nieghbour of Betty's had heard our conversation and called us to sit with him, we did, and to my surprise it was Alec Bowler, an old workmate from my apprentice days. He was as astounded as l. Without another word he gave us a key to share his home. Does anyone else Have memmories of early war years with nowhere to live Skeets.
Always been known locally as 'The Earl'
don't think it's a proper pub any more, keeps closing, changing hands,
and no regular opening times,
at one time it was some sort of community place.

When I frequented the Earl (70's/80's),
the landlord at the time was called Henry or Harry,
sorry can't think of his second name?
He was a former boxer, so I was told,
he owned a race horse at the time
that had blood connections to Red Rum,
strangely I do remember the name of the horse, it was Red Earl.
This is an odd one. Cock Inn Oughtibridge

Ride a cock horse comes to mind. It use to be a coaching house.

The Cock Horse was the lead horse that pulled Barges along a Canal but was also used for any strong dominant horse.
