dunsbyowl1867
Now this was a game! Only two years before Wednesday had to beat Bolton to stay in Div 2 and this time Div 4 was a shameful possibility! On the face of it - only Southend - but Wednesday (managed by the Vulcan lookalike Len Ashurst) were in the 3rd division relegation zone (as were Southend) and had to win. A fantastic night - played on a Thursday - only 26,000 thankfully they did win! The only way was up! Well eventually.
mickjj
Before my time this is from the 1904/05 season in a game against Small Heath (Birmingham City) Some oddities here, you will notice on the team sheet that the Wednesday team are numbered one through eleven and the Small Heath team twelve through twenty two. This programme is also full of great ad's for many historical Sheffield buisnesses. Note the great picture of the old Aurthur Davy's store. http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/uploads/monthly_06_2007/post-14-1181881402.jpg,http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/uploads/monthly_06_2007/post-14-1181881430.jpg http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/uploads/monthly_06_2007/post-14-1181881441.jpg,http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/uploads/monthly_06_2007/post-14-1181881452.jpg,http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/uploads/monthly_06_2007/post-14-1181881464.jpg http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/uploads/monthly_06_2007/post-14-1181881473.jpg,http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/uploads/monthly_06_2007/post-14-1181881482.jpg,http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/uploads/monthly_06_2007/post-14-1181881493.jpg

That must be worth a few bob. The adverts are facinating. I like the one about the players having been invited to the Alexandra theatre ( imagine that happening today?) and the one you mention for Davy's - I thought Poloney was some American sausage but obviously propular here then. dunsbyowl1867
Doubt it's rare or a classic match but of interest was the appearance of Blackpool's no 7, Stanley Matthews who was nearing 43! He began his career at Stoke in 1930 at the age of 15. At the smae age I'd doubt I could run from one end of the Hillsborough pitch to the other!
