I calculate, using a modern map that

Sheffield Midland to Attercliffe Rd is about 1500 yds

Sheffield Midland to Brightside is about 2.5 miles

Millhouses to Beauchief about 1500 yds

Beauchief to Dore & Totley about 800 yds

You can imagine why people used Dore/Beauchief/Millhouses to travel into Sheffield, but not from Beauchief to Dore.

My late father had a story, when he lived at Totley and worked at Mappin & Webb's on Queens Rd, he would travel to work by bus from Totley and get off on Queens Rd nr Mappin & Webbs, a good journey.

However the works manager who also lived a Totley would walk down to Dore & Totley station, catch the train to Heeley, then walk down to Mappin & Webbs, the reasons were:

1. He thought he was commuting to work like the city types in London

2. He did not have to travel to work with his workers.

Strange what people do!

According to the Diesel Enthusiasts Pocket Guide (all distances are from St Pancras):

Dore and Totley 154 miles 20 chains

Beauchief 154 miles 75 chains (ie 55 chains from Dore)

Millhouses 155 miles 61 chains (ie 66 chains from Beauchief)

Heeley 157 miles 11 chains (ie 1 mile 30 chains from Millhouses)

Sheffield Midland 158 miles 41 chains (ie 1 mile 30 chains from Heeley)

Attercliffe 159 miles 34 chains (ie 73 chains from Sheffield Midland)

Brightside 161 miles 30 chains (ie 1 mile 76 chains from Attercliffe)

Hence Beuachief to Dore & Totley is indeed the shortest rail journey within Sheffield, at 55 chains (assuming my source is correct)

Given that a chain is 22 yds X 55 = 1210 yds, a bit more than my estimate but not far off

I have added these distances to the main entries in the Sheffield Railway Stations Topics

This is more than your estimate by 1210 - 800 = 410 yards

Or if you prefer 18chains 14 yards

Or even 18 chains 2 rods* 4 yards

NOTE * rods, also called poles and perches

Isn't Imperial measurement fantastic and great for causing utter confusion.

There was a time when every school exercise book on the back cover contained a wealth of important information like this but which today would be considered totally useless and in any case is probably totally incomprehensible to anyone under a certain age and part of the metric generation.

At 121 chains this is the 3rd shortage Railway Journey in Sheffield

121 chains, thats just a few footsteps on the top side of a mile and a half (1.5125 miles).

In metric about 2.42 kilometres or 2420 metres

If the weathers nice you could walk that, hardly worth waiting for the train.
