Guest plain talker
Nice to have you back online with us again plain talker. All those A----- Road, A-----Lane and C----K------Road is actually a big clue and has given me a few ideas as well. Looks like vox messing it up may have helped the rest of us out. I'm near it most weeks. hehe. cheers, dave. I'm still a bit hit-and-miss, with the old ticker, but looking to improve since the pacemaker op. I love to chat about old Sheffield, :D I've PM'd Vox, too, about the five-and-twenty-past seven clock, too, BTW>
DaveH
I'm near it most weeks. hehe. cheers, dave. I'm still a bit hit-and-miss, with the old ticker, I take it that the "old ticker" is your heart and not the mystery clock. Now take care plain talker, It's one of my rules that all the "old tickers" on here have to be "a bit dodgy" You don't want a "dodgy old ticker" do you? DaveH
the five-and-twenty-past seven clock So is it, twenty five past seven or five and twenty past seven? How should we say it? To me its the first one, but only because when I was young my grandfather taught me how to tell the time in about 2 hours using an old clock that he could move the hands round on and explain what the hands and numbers meant to me. No one else ever taught me as effectively how to tell the time from a clock.
vox
You're as correct as a right person PT. The very place. Good to have you back. A Also great to hear (see) the use of the good old "Five and Twenty Past" time format. Not heard it used for ages. I think I'll start using it again myself. Now take care plain talker, It's one of my rules that all the "old tickers" on here have to be "a bit dodgy" You don't want a "dodgy old ticker" do you? sorry bit of a hijack, there, had some fun and games, at the end of April:- I collapsed, quite spectacularly. I was rushed into the Northern Gen, where they found out my heart was being a bit, erm, half-hearted () and forgetting to beat. ( ) so they threatened me with a pacemaker, which I now have. I'm starting to get better, and am feeling like the old PT, with a bit of Pep, and ZIP again. it as hairy-scary for a while, though. Saying that, I'm now boasting, proudly, that I have a bionic heart. I go back to the hospital, next week, for a checkup.
DaveH
I'm now boasting, proudly, that I have a bionic heart. Did it cost 6 million dollars? If so, do they do it on the NHS? :o

My dad's side of the family used it but not my moms. They only used it for those particular times - five and twenty to and five and twenty past. Not anything else. I don't know if it was just a Sheffield'ism or generally northern or maybe country wide. Anybody know ? ============= On the subject of time, It amuses me that we now have watches which are accurate to a split second and yet when asked the time we usually reply with something like "Nearly half past" or "Just gone five to". SteveHB
I'm pretty certain where that clock is. I'm going to put a PM up for Stuart, I mean Steve See you laters! :D Yes your answer is correct PT, along with Stuart0742 and vox. The clock is on The Royal Standard PH on St Mary's Road, what we don't know is what year the Ward's Ales sign was removed, or the date when the clock was installed. Prior to the clock picturesheffield Do any of our members know of any other Pubs or WMC's in the Sheffield area that display a clock on an exterior wall? I have come across both figures of speech before and would of course understand and accept either of them, but I would only use the "25 past" myself, which seems to be your mothers family method. It would be nice to find our how the oral telling of time developed in this way and what its geofraphical distribution is.

The latest expression around our way seems to be the word "-ish", meaning approximately or round about. It has been around for some time and given proper use in expressions like "I will meet you in Fargate outside Marks & Spencers at 6 o'clock -ish" which makes sense, but ask someone the time these days that has a super accurate watch and they are likely to say "It's six thirteen and twenty two point seven seconds -ish" which doesn't make sense, a PRECISE time (It's six thirteen and twenty two point seven seconds precisely) is not an -ish! The Royal Standard was once a very local pub to both you and Stuart wasn't it Steve? I am suprised that it is still open A few years ago (late 1990's) Sheffield Steam Club was looking for a meetings venue and for a few months we used the Royal Standard The pub looked very run down and lacking in customers, in fact they were so keen to keep our custom once or twice a month that they offered us exclusive use of an upstairs room for nowt. I will have to go in and see what it's like today and perhaps sample a pint or two. Who'se round is it? yours or Stuarts? lol

I think the CK one (not Calvin Klein) gives it away as to the location. Not my part of town I'm afraid In any case the clock has been vandalised and smashed, I didn't think they had hooligans in that rather posh part of town :o
DaveH
Back from servicing and maintainence and being refitted today Going back like new and Wayne Beckett is nowhere in sight! The dodgy mystery of mystery clock #2 is now resolved. Today it was fitted and working as normal. Even the time was right
madannie77
No luck with Steve's. I had an idea where I might have seen it. A round black clock, bracketed, on a brick wall, very close to a railway line There the similarities ended I'm afraid. This one is very near to an extinct railway station. Where is it ? During my brief visit to Sheffield a couple of weeks back I passed this particular location and noted this clock, but never went back to get a photo. not often I know where a mystery clock is :)

DaveH
Was W-------- Road mentioned No it wasn't, but at least it fits. There are 2 W---- Roads one either side of A------ Road (South) I will assume it is the one on the same side of the road as C---- K---- Road Hang on, no I won't as the other one is on the opposite side along with A---- Lane

madannie77
All these dashes are driving me dotty Don't know if this is a mystery clock, but it is certainly lacking in detail and accuracy: it was not half past five when I photographed it. vox
Was W-------- Road mentioned I've started a bit of a mess here have I not ? For those who haven't got it yet but want to carry on trying. W - Road is important. A - Road is important and there's another A - Road a few hundred yards away. Just forget the rest. and forget the ex-station. It's further away than I thought.
