Double Decker, Horse Drawn Tram No. 1

http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/pi...ff.refno=s00115

At Nether Edge Depot Yard.

This tram is the second No 1 in the Sheffield Tramways Company fleet, seen when brand new in 1886. The previous no 1 was withdrawn the previous year.

This tram is an Eades reversible type: at the terminus, a locking pin is removed from the body, and the horses walk round the tram, the body swivelling around. This had the advantages of the removal of the need to unharness the horses, the need for only one driving position and the need for only one staircase, thereby increasing the space available for seating.

A bit of history here (near the bottom of the page):

and photos of a recently restored Eades Reversible tram here: beautiful!
