The Egg Box and Peace Gardens

The Egg Box was much maligned, and it certainly earned its nickname, but it was a clever building. It was carefully designed for a specific number of people, and did not need heating as the requirement would be met by heat from the lighting, and from the occupants. Unfortunately shortly after it opened the Council finances were in dire straits, so other buildings were closed and the staff shoehorned into the Egg Box, upsetting all the calculations.

On the flat roof there was a lawn on a raised area. I'm told that when this was first laid, it used a technique using a sheet of polystyrene impregnated with grass seed. It apparently germinated OK, but the whole lot blew off when the wind got under it!
