Old Wednesday Picture

Recommended Posts

I found this photograph of The Wednesday FC a couple of years back. I've not seen it published anywhere and the club don't have a copy. I don't need it for the work I am doing so it's the file is pretty much redundant on my computer. Thought I'd put it up on here incase anyone else wants to see it. It is almost certainly taken in 1891 or the season after they lost in the FA Cup final to Blackburn Rovers, due to the kit and some of the players that are on here or are not on here.

Billy Betts is definately on here. I could identify one or two others when I looked into it but can't remember. Anyone know any of the others?

The big man in the bowler on the left is John Holmes, who was the main club official at the time. Several of the players are familiar from other photographs, but don't have these to hand. But it's a great picture.

Right, here goes. Been back looking at my research and these are the names I have. I'm pretty sure, but not 100%. The team is the 1891-92 side, missing Spiksley (not sure why yet, but H. Brandon at outside left should help me work it out)

Here's a print of the 1890 Cup Final, played at Kennington Oval, London on Saturday 29th March 1890, available from Grosvenor Prints for £850 (plus VAT).  The teams are listed below that.

" Photographic print, very scarce. Size: 240 x 400mm. (9½ x 15¾"). Glued to sheet.
A photographic print of the late Victorian monochrome photogravure by Goupil & Co entitled 'A Football Match, Association Game', after the original painting by W. H.Overend and L .P. Smythe. This print shows the action from the 1890 F.A. Cup final between Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday. Blackburn Rovers defeated Sheffield Wednesday 6-1, the second widest winning margin in Cup final history. "

I've updated the list above, so it has changed. Got a few wrong initially, but not many.

N° 2 is Arthur Joshua Dickinson.

No-one really knows what this match is. It has been linked to many more matches also.
