Well done, Dunsbyowl. Here are some names --most have actual dates (the dates are a big help, I think, in giving an impression of the popular stars of a particular time)

Feb 14th 1953: Sarah Vaughan.

March ? 1958: Buddy Holly

I went to see the 50th anniversary memorial tour of Buddy Holly last year at the City Hall (2nd March 2008) and got the souvenir programme.

I have searched through it to try and find the exact date of the original 1958 appearance but the programme only quotes

"The tour opened to rave reviews on March 1st at the Trocadero in London and finished on March 25 at the gaumont Hammersmith. It consisted of up to 3 performances per venue, each attracting crowds of 1500 to 2000 people"

So I hope someone else can provide the missing day.

It does say however that appearing with Buddy Holly and the Crickets were

Ronnie Keene & his Orchestra

The Tanner Sisters

Gary Miller

It is possible that Des O'Connor also appeared unless the Sheffield City Hall performance was on a Sunday as at the time a "No Comedians on a Sabbath" rule meant that Des O'Connor could not appear in Sunday performances.

Great list of artists OCKS, well before my time but I would have loved to see some of these acts live. Following my previous comments in the initial thread on Louis Armstrong I would certainly have wanted to see Ella Fitzgerald.

Des O'Connor was almost certainly on the bill, for I recall him talking about it at a much later date. In fact, in the earlier days of his career O'Connor appeared on the same bills as several top stars.

This will end up as a huge list!

I can only add the acts that I remember seeing there:

Thin Lizzy

Gary Moore

Darts (still got the Radio Hallam recording!)

The Tubes

Devo

Jimmy Nail

Who else used to shout "Wally!" whilst waiting for the band to come on? lol

So the City Hall show cannot have been on a Sunday then, but must be between 1st and 25 March 1958. Still working on an exact date.

Acts that have appeared at the City Hall

The Beatles

According to Mark Lewisohn's definative work on The Beatles they appeared at Sheffield City Hall five times

Saturday 2 March 1963 (part of a tour with Helen Shapero)

Saturday 16 March 1963 (with Tommy Roe and Chris Montez)

Saturday 25 May 1963

Saturday 2 November 1963

Monday 9 November 1964

They also appeared at the Gaumont cinema on Wednesday 8 December 1965

Further to this they had also appeared at the Azena Ballroom, Gleadless on Tuesday 12 Febuary 1963

Making a total of seven appearances in the City.

Any idea of dates, Markbaby? Yes, the list will be long, but what a contribution to social and local entertainment history!

I saw Pink Floyd there doing the Echoes tour around 1971

Around the same time we went to see a popular band at that time called Van de Graph Generator they were crap.

The two backing groups we had never heard of were brilliant:

Lindisfarne and

Genesis

Found the Date for Devo, but I can only guess the year at 1979

Sorry Markbaby but in 1979 June 6 would have been on a Wednesday (used an eternal calendar), however as the following year was a leap year this would move it on 2 days so that 6 June 1980 would have been on a Friday. going the other way from 1979 1975 would be the previous year to fit the day and date criteria

Nice One Dave! lol

1980 it was then, because the show started with a film from their album" Q:are we not men? A: We are Devo" which was released in 1978.

£3.50 seemed a lot of money then!

Thanks Markbaby,

I use the eternal calendar built into the family tree program Legacy quite a bit to check day and date compatibility for a particular year, or just to put a day to a given date (very handy). In this case as you were unsure about the exact year I realised that the information in the picture provided could be made to reveal the year quite easily.

OK OCSK,

4 March 1958 it is then for Buddy Holly at the City hall Sheffield. That fits in nicely with what I thought and as this date would have been on a Tuesday it would not have prevented des O'Connor from appearing as a comedian.
