"In May 1933 the general manager reported that the track on the Nether Edge line, which had not had any extensive work for ten years, needed heavy renewals. He suggested that instead buses might be substituted for the trams. The track from Ecclesall Road junction to the Nether Edge terminus was just over a mile long, and the manager produced a report containing the usual figures showing the cost of track renewals and the ten cars allocated to the route which could be considered to need replacement. Against this was set the cost of ten buses and road reinstatement; it was decided to replace the tramway." Charles C. Hall, Sheffield Transport

The bonus was that bus services could be extended up to the hospital during visiting times.
