RICHARDB SO THIS IS WHERE THE SOUND OF MUSIC ORIGINATED I WOULD IMAGINE , THOMAS WILLIAM DEY ,WAS LILLIAN DEY'S FATHER I BELIEVE, SHE RAN THE SCHOOL OF DANCING ON PITSMOOR RD [WHERE I HAD MY FIRST DANCING LESSON] SHE WAS A BIG GIRL, AND USED TO PULL HER PUPIL LIKE A CART HORSE ,THIS PLACE WAS LATER TO BECOME THE MOJO CLUB RUN BY PETE STRINGFELLOW.

SKEETS, PS. AS FOR OSBOURNE HOUSE, IT WAS RUN, DURING THE WAR , AS A HOME FOR NAUGHTY GIRLS, BY NUNS . AND THOSE MISSING SLATES ,WERE NOT DISLODGED BY THE WIND, NOTE HOW THEY WERE REMOVED EITHER SIDE OF THE LEAD VALLEY, FOR EASEY REMOVAL[MOST LIKELY SOMEONE HAD A JOB FOR IT, BUT WERE DISTURBED] WITHOUT DAMAGE, MOST LIKELY IT IS 6/9 POUND LEAD SO WILL BE VERY COSTLY. it's no longer the councils' decision, twas they who flogged it on seven years ago. It went for £100,000 then, buyer unknown. It is a terrible shame it is still such a wreck.

Great to hear from a relative of someone on the lists. I'm not related to anyone on here, just finding "stuff" and entering it up on here in the hope that someone like you finds it and makes a connection or maybe finds an address or some dates they didn't know about previously.

Welcome to the Site Bassoon - hope you can add to our collective knowledge of Sheffieldness or you can pose us some questions to ponder on.

Earlier maps shown as 2 separate houses and along with Nos 144 & 146 named as Wood Bank. Property in yellow is No. 138, Lea Wood also known as Osborn House.

No entry in Whites 1856 Directory probably being built around this time. 1862 Directory the houses in the Street Index are listed under Occupation Road, Wood Bank, none of the houses are named or numbered.

Wood Bank No. 140:

1862 occupant of the property is Alfred Chadburn, optician of Chadburn Brothers, opticians to H.R.H. Prince Albert and manufacturers of optical, mathematical, philosophical, photographic instruments and apparatus at Albion Works, 26 Nursery Street and manufacturers of the patent and metallic steam and pressure gauge, Nursery Street, Stanley Street & Liverpool. The House is recorded as Wood Bank, Burngreave Road.

Francis Wright Chadburn of the partnership was living at No. 185 Pitsmoor.

Alfred & Francis Wright Chadburn make a Sheffield Flood Claim in 1864 but their abodes aren't recorded.

More information about Chadburn Brothers Link.

1879 Thomas Hague residing at Wood Bank, his company, Thomas Hague & Co manufactured, fire irons, ash pans, fenders etc at London Works, Bridge Street.

More information about Thomas Hague Link.

https://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/topic/19522-thomas-hague-fire-irons-manufacturer-bridge-street-formerly-h-w-turner/

Alfred B Kent, engineer is recorded as the occupant in the Directories of 1905 & 1911, no name of the business is listed so it is possible he was an employee rather than a business owner, but is better to keep an open mind.

Wood Bank No.142:

Occupant in 1862 was Joseph Burdekin Jackson, merchant & manufacturer, Spear & Jackson  The house is listed as Wood Bank, Burngreave Road.

More information about Joseph Burdekin Jackson and Spear and Jackson Link.

By 1879 Joseph Burdekin Jackson had moved to Kersal Mount, Manchester Road and Mr. John Linley was in occupation at Wood Bank. No occupation given in the listing but Local Studies Obituary List:

John Linley Comb Manufacturer of Woodbank 28th January 1880.

1905 Thomas James Robinson, no occupation listed and in 1911 Mrs. Susan Robinson.

Of course Census, searches of other Directories (only selected Directories searched) Obituaries etc. would provide more information regarding the Occupants of Nos 140 & 142 down the years but I've made a start and hopefully whetted somebodies curiosity to research more information and perhaps add their personal memories of the property.

My great Aunt Ethel, sometime headteacher of All Saints school, and her brother Captain Walter, a sales manager at Firth Brown,, lived in a large house on ,Abbeyfield Road. Pre War I am told they had servants and as a young boy in 1940s post war Sheffield ,coming from the Brushes Council estate I was impressed with milk in delicate jugs, sugar in a glass dish and jam not being in a jar but also in a glass dish!

No. 150 The Poplars

The Directories of 1856 & 1862 record William Denton, gentleman at Burngreave Road.

William in 1849 & 1852 is also recorded as a "Gent" but house Pitsmoor. So who is he?

1839 Robson's Directory there are 2 William Denton one of Little Sheffield a plasterer the other table knife manufacturer, 52 Bailey Street. He could of course have come from outside Sheffield.

He must have been a person of considerable wealth, this house and it's neighbours either side were probably built at the same time. The other two were occupied by wealthy established industrialists, Hunter and Cadman. How did Denton gain his wealth and income?

Search of Free Bmd gives possibilities for the death of William.

1st Q 1861 Ecclesall Bierlow; 1st Q 1862 Sheffield; 1st Q 1863 Sheffield; 2nd Q Ecclesall Bierlow aged 70; 1st Q 1869 Sheffield aged 62; 4th Q 1871 Wortley aged 80.   Census returns and an obituary will of course reveal more about him. Surprisingly he doesn't feature in the Sheffield Telegraph Obituary Index.

Interestingly there is a Flood Claim for Edwin Denton, gentleman of Vine Cottage, Pitsmoor. It appears he owned property in Long Croft and payment was made to clearing dirt out of 20 houses. Was he a possible benificiary of William?

https://sheffieldfloodclaimsarchive.shu.ac.uk/claimSummary.cfm?claim=6-5108

A quote from Reminiscences of Old Sheffield, it's Streets and it's People. The publication relates to articles and letters which appeared in the Sheffield and Rotherham Independent 1872/3

"At the corner of Colson style was Mr. Denton, grocer of Fox hill. He was the brother to the late William Denton of Pitsmoor."

Did William have a connection to the Dentons of the Loxley Valley?

1879 Directory lists William Fisher in the property an iron & metal broker, Joiner Lane. House not named Poplars in the Directory.

1905 Henry Maxey, agent for Steel Peach & Tozer Ltd, George Street, h. The Poplars. By the time of the 1911 Directory Henry may have retired as no occupation is recorded. An unusual name. Henry may have died aged 75 4th Q 1912.

These listings are names from selected Directories, there may have been other occupants in the intervening years.
