Thanks Deansgirl for posting these pictures; my father's father is listed under the Imperial Yeomanry adding another piece of imformation to the family file. This is especially interesting as no one had ever mentioned that his name was there. Mind you he died when I was two and I only remember his second wife and his brother-in-law.

Sheffield at the Front is a pictorial memorial, published by Sheffield Independent Newspapers, to all those Sheffield men who served in the Boer War, both those who died and those who survived. It consists largely of photographs, both individual portraits and groups. There is a copy in Sheffield Local Studies Library.

The following is an index originally posted on the ENG-Sheffield genealogy list by Eric Youle in Australia. Note: Eric said when posting it that there may still be scanning errors:

Theres this image i have of Benjamin Bowens family headstone, trouble is i cant remember which cemetery i took it in !

He appears on the list posted above by Hugh, also there are a few of his papers surviving on Ancestry in with the WW1 service papers. His fathers address is given as -

Henry Bowen, 71 Oxford road, Sheffield.

Benjamin attained the rank of Sergt. number 100 York & Lancs, on 5th March 1892. He was a wood carver by trade. Looks like he set off for South Africa on or abouts the 13th of December 1899.

Killed in action on 20/1/1900.

Dean.

In my collection is a picture which we think is connected to the Boer War. It shows horses so they must be a mounted or transport regiment. I don't know who the men are, but I would guess that a least one is a relative. The orginal is very dark so I have cleaned it up with a photo shop application. The original is mounted on a stiff card of a photographer called Basebe of 32 Station Road Aldershot. It measures 15cm by 10.5cm.

SteveHB the image on this site is JPG converstion of a much larger file. When I did the converstion the program said it wouldn't look as good. If that is what you are refering too.

Hi History dude,

I'm not quite sure what you mean by conversion ?

Did you scan your original photograph at something like 150 to 300 dpi,

and then did your photoshop editing on the large file,

before reducing the size.

My relative from Sheffield who served in the 3rd Bn Y & L regiment, Pte Ernest Woollen 9570 is not on that Town Hall Roll of honour. Also, I have several other Sheffield family members who served with the 2nd Cheshire Regt in the Boer War who also aren't recorded. It confuses me a little that Roll!

On the 1901 cencus, my great great grandfather is stated as being in South Africa. His name was Thomas Elliott, born in Sheffield 1863 and resided at 5 Lawson Street, Sheffield.

In addition, can't seem to find anything related to him on this post so not sure what he was doing there.

There are several Thomas or T Elliotts on find my past's Boer War records including one in the Yorks and Lancs. Don't suppose he had a middle name did he? Have you checked on the Boer War medal rolls? They're available on ancestry. Just found the census return that had been eluding me, they lived at 7 Lawson Street and it really does say 'husband in S Africa'.

I keep seeing the name 'Thomas Senior Elliott,' which was his stated name on his son's (my great grandfather) wedding certificate. Having a look on Ancestry now to see if there is anything on him, but I don't have much to go on. He isn't on the pictures at the beginning of the post so not sure what he was doing there.

He did volunteer to serve in the West Yorkshire Regiment in 1914 at the age of 52, so I get the impression that he would have volunteered to go to South Africa.

I would recommend you search the boer war medal rolls on Ancestry, that'll be your best bet and simply download all the instances of a Thomas or T Elliot and go through them discounting men as you go.

Thanks Saw119. The only problem is that 'husband in South Africa' is all I have to go off. If he had volunteered, would it be most likely to be for a local regiment?

Well, I've already discounted the Thomas Elliott who was in the 1st Btn. Yorks & Lancs, his service papers are on FMP but he was born in Manchester. I'll keep looking and will be able to check the medal rolls in next couple of days. It's actually a little unlikely he would have been in a local regiment if he had volunteered. I have two relatives who were both in the Cheshire regiment but born, raised and returned to Sheffield but another was in the 3rd Btn. Yorks and Lancs! He is not on the Roll either.I suppose the question is whether he was a soldier before the war in SA had broken out, if he was then he wouldn't be recorded as a volunteer because he was already serving.

Untouched up version of the above earlier photo I posted.

The main reason that I'm reposting it is that I can't identify the cap badges on the soldiers. It looks to me a bit like the RAF wings, though of course it's not connected with them. The middle bit is a shield, the top a bauble? Does anyone know what regiment they are from?

A clue might be in the vast load of horses in the background. The badge however does not seem to belong to horse artillery. Which has a cannon in the middle of the badge.

Hello History Dude,

I think I may be able to help on the photo.

It's highly unlikely to be BOER war I'm afraid.

The cap on which you can see the cap badge is called a Broderick cap, these were introduced in 1902 and stopped being issued in1907.

If you believe the photo has local interest, then the regiment is likely to be the West Riding Royal Field/Horse Artillery. They were formed in 1907/1908 respectively.

It could of course be Royal Artillery or Royal Hose Artillery. They used horses for the lighter guns, & steam tractors for the heavier guns.

It's a fantastic photo for those (like me) interested in the history of military uniform, just about every type of head wear that could have been worn is on show!

Many thanks for sharing.

regards,

Andy C
