Not heard that one before C&A was built on the site of the old Fitzalan market which closed in April 1930 after 144 years. C&A was rebuilt in the 1950s. Guest Falls Posted March 23, 2009 Share Posted March 23, 2009 By the time I was old enough to start noticing things, the Blitz debris at the C&A had been cleared away right down to the basement. In the years following the Blitz, the basement seemed to be often full of water. Either this was because it collected rainwater or it had been purposely flooded. One one occassion, the Royal Engineers assembled a small section of a pontoon bridge on the water in the basement so people could actually seehow they did it and what they looked like. In those days, the only visual information you got about the war was photos in the newspapers or the newsreels at the pictures. At the same time, there was always something going on with respect to the war and the armed services. The government was continually asking people to buy Bonds so the RAF would bring aircraft in from time to time and put them on dispay in a prominent place in town. The Army would bring in heavy equipment and so on. Can't remember what the Navy did. They had long since given up trying to get anything worth while up the canal.
