1841 Census

Wonder if anyone can help deciphering this for me.

The image below includes details about my GGGG grandfather, William Hill.

The census shows that he was living in Sharrow Vale in 1841.

However, can anyone help in identifying what his occupdation was?

I know there was a snuff mill in Sharrow around this time and would suggest that the occupation listed for John Fryas (sp?) is "Snuff M"

So Im wondering if the scrawl against William is the same and the clerk just got fed up of writing the same thing that he got a bit lazy!?

Any ideas???

From looking around at other nearby entries, I'd suggest it is "Snuff M J" which could stand for "Snuff Maker Journeyman" or "Snuff Manufacturer Journeyman". There are nearby entries for the Wilson family that just say "Snuff M"

cheers

Saw Manufacturer

Suggest Tyas is the surname.

I'd agree that the entry for your GGGG Grandfather William Hill, is SAW Manufacturer, same as the entry (John?) Walker a few lines above.

The word doesn't match the entry for Tyas which, to my mind, clearly does say SNUFF.
