Painted fabrics employed ex servicemen and was based in part of the disused RFC base at Meadowhead.

How long was it there for and what happened to it?

Does anybody know the history.

Does this help:

http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sys_upl/templa...=186&page=1

(if the direct link doesn't work, it's http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraries/arch...es/publications, select history guides, and it's near the bottom)

National archives reference some more material located in the Sheffield archives:

"Painted Fabrics Ltd, Norton, Sheffield: papers and photographs c1920-2002 (2005/147)" http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/accessi...rns/05ac199.htm

This nice plaque on the citysnapper site too: http://citysnapper.org/chantrey/sheffield/...7meadowhead.jpg

Note that it appears to have been an army camp, not the aerodrome. Norton must have been awash with service personnel at the end of the Great War!

The WW1 personel camps were away from the actual airfield (see my posts in the airfield topic)

Here is the map I added to that topic

Painted Fabrics took over what was Womens camp 3 in 1923.

What we don't have is a 1950's map to show the entire site of this (our OS maps don't cover it) my 1950's Streetplan in the other Maps section just touches the outskirts of the painted fabrics site.

I suppose the question is what happened to the site upto 1923 from when the airfield closed.

See extract from 1950's streetplan, just catches the painted fabrics site

Looking at the Airfield info Painted Fabrics and camp 3 of the airfield are the same place.

Extract :

Painted Fabrics Limited was started by Annie Bindon Carter in 1923.

During WW1 Annie volunteered her time at Wharncliffe War Hospital at Middlewood, Sheffield. She taught convalescent patients to stencil as a pastime.

Annie came across many injured servicemen who were being brought back from the trenches with limbs missing.

Painted Fabrics “Will you come?” to the painted Fabrics gift shop (corner of Fargate and Leopold Street)arc00644.jpg.67d3fab018ddf2ea9560fd74bf3aedc2.jpgarc00644

The establishment of Painted Fabrics Limited owed much to Annie Bindon Carter (1883-1969) who, in 1915, volunteered to help at the Wharncliffe War Hospital at Middlewood, Sheffield. She organised painting classes as a form of occupational therapy for soldiers who had suffered physical and psychological injuries (including amputations) during the First World War.

At the end of the war Mrs Carter obtained premises at West Bar, Sheffield which were converted and equipped as workshops for a few men, with financial help from local people. After a visit from Earl Haig, the authorities realised the possibilities of employment for severely disabled ex-servicemen that the enterprise presented. In 1923, land and hutments at the old WAAC (Women's Auxiliary Army Corps) camp at Norton Woodseats, Sheffield were purchased by the United Services Fund and leased to the newly formed company Painted Fabrics Limited. Some of the huts became workshops, while others were converted to homes for some of the men and their wives and families.

Note this card says 'Do three things for Armistice Day - sign this card, post this card, buy a poppy'.

Lucy Allen (previously Lucy Hodder) worked at Painted Fabrics in their shop on West Street. She was the wife of Sheffield artist Harry Epworth Allen and it's possible they met through the charity since Allen had been badly wounded during WW1 and lost a leg.
