Some great pics on here. I am after a request this time

I wonder if anyone might just have any photographs of Danville Street, located very near Burngreave Cemetary? My father lived there I believe around the end of WWI but not sure how long for. I have a memory as a small boy in the 1950s visiting there to see friends of my father who still lived there at the time. Back alleys and court yards come to mind and the area known as Danville Mount which all the kids used to play on.

My Gt ggrandad William Cliffe lived at 12Ct 3 Danville St I know he was there in 1896 and I know he was there in 1910. He left sometime during the 1st WW or just after it, Ive not found the exaxt date up to now, or any pics of the area. In September 1916 a Zeppelin dropped a bomb on Danville St, amongst others, and killed one man,it may have damaged some houses, causing some people to leave. In 1885 there was a murder at 39 Danville St a woman by the name of Mary Jane Simms was killed the next door neighbour Mrs Godley was a witness. Have you heard of any of these names in family stories etc.

if you do find any pics please let me know

The Escort estate in the foreground is registered M (1974) and doesnt look that new! so i guess it could be the "filling in - building over "the Cambridge Arcade , around 76-77 ? Note also the Mini Clubman Traveller in the background - worth a a few grand nowadays as very rare , and also the "Wimpy Bar" (forerunner of Mc Ds?)

Hi Siren - All very fascinating to read. I have since tried to check some facts and I think he lived there from around 1917 on when he was about 4. He did often tell stories of the Zeppelin's he saw as a young lad and it looks like he lived there at the time of the damage caused by the 1916 bomb. I don't know of these names or really anything else. He did tell us that this area was affected by the Sheffield Gang Wars in the 1920's when he was a young teen. The family moved to Southey in the late 1930s I believe. I of course will post some pics on here if I ever find any.

Close, right address, wrong person .... bugger

Mrs Eliza GREENOUGH Shopkeeper 39 Danville Street Kelly's 1893

RichardB

The person is right, the murder happened in 1885. The Times Tues Aug 4th 1885, not 1893.

A View of Hyde Park flats that you can't get anymore because there's houses in the way

:) :):) Love the pics, Sheffield is changing so fast, we need to keep reminding ourselves how it looked even as recently as the 90s
