The flat to the right of Shauns eyes....

The house next to the passage near the white house in City Road across Norfolk Field....

We could do a picture tour of Sheffield based on places where wayneybabes has lived lol

Actually, when i am famous later in life, and i write my autobiography, these photos will come in handy

Hi Ian,

Nice to hear from some ex students of CTS / Ashleigh school (You must have been there when it went Comprehensive in 1969 and changed its name!)

I only went to Ashleigh for 6th form to do A levels between 1972 and 1974 so was there after you, although my old Junior School buddy Steven Crookes was there from 1967 to 1972.

Break in with the safe incident must have been before my time.

To copy my photos (or any others) to your computer all you need to do is -

1

Click on the thumbnail in the post to open the full size image

2

RIGHT CLICK on the opened full size image, this will open a menu from which you can select "Save Image As"

3

In the box which opens you can alter the image file name to something that you want to call it and select a location on your computer where you want to save the image (eg, Desktop, My Documents. My Pictures etc)

4

After doing this click OK and the image will be downloaded and saved to your computer.

Hope this helps,

DaveH

Thanks for the reply Dave and apologies for the delay. The problem that I am having is opening the thumbnail to a full size image. For some reason this is not happening. As yet I have only been able to copy thumbnails.

Ian.

Ian.

Should open by double clicking the thumbnail

However, since the site was updated last March ther have been issues with the way in which images are displayed and what menu you get if you right-click an image.

So, you could try right clicking the image and see if the displayed menu has options to open it full size elsewhere.

These problems seem to vary depending on which browser you are using and Internet Explorer has different issues to Firefox.

Which browser are you using?

There are even more pictures of the Gleadless and Herdings area in this topic here.

The Camels Hump

Sounds a strange title for a topic but apparently "The Camel's Hump" is sledge run through Herdings woods from Raeburn Road down towards the lower parts of Leighton Road.

Back at the junction of Leighton Road and Norton Avenue is this boozer which has been there since the estate was built.

Today it is called CUTLERS but I am sure it was originally called "THE CUTLERS ARMS" and was a Whitbread house.

Most pictures of the pub are taken from the road junction to show the frant entrance and signs but this one is taken from back along Leighton Road to show that newly built extension at the back. I wanted to show this as a few years ago there was an explosion at the Cutlers which involved a prank with fireworks that went badly wrong. I feel sure the extension was built as a result of damage caused by this incident but as I don't drink up there I am not 100% sure.

The Cutlers has been shut for some time, - another boozer up for sale.

It now has a sign up saying that it is soon to reopen as a Bangladeshi restraunt.

I will look forward to that, -

Me and MrsH sometimes go to a Bangladeshi restraunt at Whittington Moor, Chesterfield called The Deepa and we really like their stuff, - OK it's similar to Indian but it does have subtle differences and makes a very nice meal.

So we could be getting a similar place much nearer home.

Rear of The Cutlers, showing the new back extension built after a firework incident caused a lot of damage one November night many years ago

..and now its shut up and suffering a bit of vandalism here is the side entrance

It used to be proudly called THE CUTLERS ARMS, then it got changed and lowered to just CUTLERS and now it is the _U_LERS :(

From the front it still looks very forlorn but at least we have the promise of that Bangladeshi restraunt in the near future

The sign also indicates, as shown here..

..that the restraunt is in fact part of the same group as The Deepa at Whittington Moor Chesterfield (Well, there can't be that many genuine Bangladeshi restraunts around can there <_< )

The sign also indicates that they own an Indian restraunt in Sheffield. I have never been to that one but I think it is somewhere out Abbeydale Road way.

I'm looking forward to this place reopening now as we have had some superb Bangladeshi meals at The Deepa and now we will not have to travel as far.

I always felt a bit sorry for chef at the Deepa, - a nice young Bangladeshi lad and an excellent cook who cooks to his grandmothers own recipes and she still lives in Bangladesh. The reason I feel sorry for him is that we always seem to go to the Deepa in September when we have several family birthdays to celebrate (well, both me and MrsH). This is in the middle of Ramadan and although the chef can prepare these superb meals his religion forbids him from eating any of it during daylight hours.

The Herdings allotments.

With the estate being built on old farmland it was very fertile.

Many new residents on the estate had come from slum clearance in the City Centre and finally had a proper garden instead of just a yard and saw that as a big advantage, my grandad, a keen gardener certainly did.

Also available to residents who enjoyed gardening were these allotments between Leighton Road and Herdings Avenue just off Norton Avenue at Gleadless Townend. My grandad didn't get an allotment but he did get planning permission to put a greenhouse up in his back garden.

Residents will be familiar with this footpath which was a public footpath through the allotments and formed a short cut from opposite the bus terminus on Leighton Road down to Gleadless Townend, - it cut off having to walk the full length of Leighton Road to the Cutlers Arms and then walk down the steep bit of Norton Avenue saving a good 10 minutes.

Cyberman has recently commented about this path in another thread called "The Camels Hump" about a sledging run between Raeburn and Leighton Roads.

Inspired by his comments I have taken more photographs of this area.

The footpath starts here, on Leighton Road opposite the old peoples home with the now disused bus terminus roundabout

To the left of this entrance path is the Doctors surgery and to the right are the row of houses which ends on Norton Avenue opposite the Cutlers pub.

At the end of the path, before it exits out to Gleadless Townend opposite the end of Whites lane there is the allotments society hut which many people seem to remember.

Still there, still doing business.

Then there is this bit of path.

It starts from the end of the allotment hut, cuts up on to Littlewood Road (a cul de sac) and then up a very narrow path out onto Gleadless Road about half way between townend and the Heeley and Sheffield.

It starts on Gleadless Road, opposite the Heeley and Sheffield and runs down into the valley with the Carlton Social club on the right and the other cul de sac end of Littlewood Road on the left.

At the bottom of the hill it crosses the stream and goes into the woods.

In the woods it turns a corner and starts to climb towards the back of the allotments.

If you go down in these woods you could be in for a big suprise.

I was, I heard a noise like a motorbike or a chainsaw coming from the top of an old tree and perched up there in the branches doing his stuff was a very colourful woodpecker, - you don't see many of them about do you.

As it climbs out of the valley it swings sharp right onto a pavement leading to houses on Leighton Road. This exits onto Leighton Road just up from its junction with Raeburn Road on the opposite side of the road, - not far from the Camels Hump in fact.

Having been in the Cutlers Arms, - a fairly ordinary estate pub outlet for Whitbreads beer

..and having been the Deepa at Whittington Moor, Chesterfield, - a first class restraunt.

I think they would be better off sticking with a more traditional Bangladeshi restraunt name and forgetting about the Cutlers connection.

In my experience their cuisine sells itself without having to rely on a connection to former lesser known public house name.

Further to this, in recent weeks the sign saying that The Cutlers is going to become a Deepa Bangladeshi restraunt has been taken down, the building is deserted and no work has started to redevelop it.

It looks as though the deal may have fallen through and will not take place after all! :(

However, a quick walk along White Lane to The Old Harrow, another closed down Whitbread pub, reveals that they now intend reopening shortly as an Indian - Bangladeshi restraunt!

Perhaps Whitbreads are offering both pubs for sale and the Restraunt buyers have changed their mind about which one they are going to take on

The Gleadless Scouts Hut

I think it is the 230th Scout troup but mike142sl will know.

My son was a member of the Beavers and Cubs before giving it up as it clashed with his clarinet and saxophone sessions.

Now I don't know what Boy Scouts do these days but that blue car in the picture pulled up as I took the shot and 3 rather attractive young women got out of it and weny into the scout hut. ;-)

We played our first gig in this hall in about 1976, myself and Nick Fletcher on guitars, Neil Morrell on bass and Pete? on drums. Feels like a lifetime ago. Happy days.

I think my late father used to attend here as a member of the carnation society, anyone remember Charlie Spencer? (1970s)

No I can't remember him but my grandad was a keen gardener on the Herdings and had a greenhouse in his back garden.

As well as vegetables he grew carnations, gladioli, cryrsanthamums and, his favourite specialism, fuchias.

Flowers must go in and out of fashion, you don't see as many of those types of plants as you used to.

A pity really as they always gave a good display.

The Cutlers is now reopened as a restraunt

But not neccesarily a Bagladeshi one, it's new name is Cutlers Spice

Contact details for anyone interested in having a meal there

Not quite that,

Cutlers Spice

They have kept the pub sign and the word Cutlers in the name of the place though.

I went up to Gleadless townend earlier today but unfortunately I didn't have my camera / mobile phone with me at the time.

It seems that the Heeley & Sheffield House( Gleadless Road / Hollinsend Road junction) may be the latest boozer to bite the dust.

Although it had advertising outside indicating it was open all the doors and windows were boarded up, one carrying a small sign that all items of any value had been removed from the building, which rather indicates that it is shut down.

Will it reopen as a boozer (refurbishment perhaps?), or as a restraunt, like the Cutlers, or will it just spend years being boarded up looking for a business to use the premises, like the Elm Tree, or will they just knock it down?

Must remember to take a camera next time I go to townend.
