The hope valley line is NOT single track , it is only single from the junction at Dore to just past the curve to the main line from the hope valley line so I suspect the single track is less than a mile.

It was a exercise in the last days of BR , the aim was to move the main lines over to where the old platforms had been to increase the line speed but the lines were never moved, this bit of single track is of course a major bottle neck on the hope valley line .

Heres another shot of Heeley station taken from a train.

Would be interesting to see a modern version of this, not that there would be much to see apart from the double main line. It would however make a good Then and Now.

Mallard at Dore & Totley

1988

Somewhere I have some photos of the Mallard from that summer. I scared the life out of my mum by heading off to Grindleford for a better look (it was stopping there) with two complete strangers that I met at Dore.

They are almost certainly in Edinburgh and I am in Chicago. But I will be visiting in April so I'll try to remember to look for them.

Taken from a movie made by the Sheffield Photo Company in 1903,

may be Sheffield or is it in the outskirts ie: Derbyshire ?

(what looks to be a building on the L/H side is the rear end of a a train)

Does not look like Grindleford or any of the Hope Valley stations, nor does it look like the Midland line stations south of Sheffield (Millhouses etc).

Obviously the platforms were access direct from the road overbridge, could it be Oughtibridge or somewhere in that direction.

Its the embankment behind the platform I can not place.

Early Beauchief & Abbeydale must be a candidate.

Well done oldrowley,

and thank you

Well I stand corrected :) (actually I am sitting)

This photo is taken from Abbey Ln looking towards Sheffield last December, the staion building in Steve's photo would have been to the right where all the trees are.

In the movie made by the Sheffield Photo Company,

the train leavs Beauchief & Abbeydale station traveling from right to left in the last movie still.

"I have now lost my bearigs on this one"

This is said the next rail station on line, any ideas ?

Right to left on the 1st still would be towards Sheffield, therefore Millhouses station, but is it in the film still?

I have been wrong before on this subject :)

This could be the up platform (London Line) as there was a signal box in the background (Station canopy missing in later years)

But the train would be travelling south towards Beauchief & Abbeydale.

Arched Road bridge is behind the camera

How long is the film Steve, looks interesting

Total run time of the movie is 4 mts: 20 sec:

In AVI format the file size is 167 MB

will have to sort something out.
