Getting children in the fresh air is great, even if they no longer have the freedoms that we had. If no-one's said it already, welcome to the site! FRESH AIR? - dont know how fresh the air is around the Mega Centre on Bernard street is , but its next door to Sheffields biggest waste incinerater spewing out its pollutants in the air. (Site of the Greenpiece demo a few years back- with men absailing down the large chimney and spelling TOXIC in big black letters). In the eighteenth century they used the Churchyard as a playground, but after objections from the Churchwardens they were confined to playing on the school roof, where railings can still be seen. The Charity School owned a quarry on Psalter Lane, using the revenues from renting it out for the school. The need for bigger premises led to the Trustees using the quarry site and its stone to build a new school, which opened in 1911. If you come down Greystones Road and look across Ecclesall Road at the supermarket; you're looking at the gap created in building the new school. huthwaite Posted July 15, 2007 Share Posted July 15, 2007 Hi all, I went to Broomhill School in the 60's and remember the rooftop playground, at this time the school was shared with Lydgate School prior to the new middle school opening at the top of Shore Lane, the school was somehow split into two distinct entities and we babies and the "big kids" never met, they were allowed to play at the roof ground but we were instructed never to venture there as it was not safe for we littlies, I do remember that just before we left for the unknown terrors of Nethergreen, we were allowed an escorted visit to the roof to allow us to see the view. Shortly afterwards the School became purely infants and I believe that the access to the roof was blocked to protect the children in the more safety conscious times. The Bow building, part of the" education buildings", on the corner of Holly St and West St, housed the Infants' School, I believe, and that building was served by a rooftop playground. I used to go to the Bow Building, when it was a youth centre in the early 1980s, called the Bow Centre. We'd ofen sneak up onto the roof, for a ciggie, back then. Did the pupils wear a uniform ? etc etc blah blah For advanced students, where did the educational establishment relocate to ? In 1968 for a year or two it was the home of Shirecliffe College while the new college was being built on Standish Way just off Shirecliffe Road. Being a very high point you could see for miles around and it overlooked Owlerton and was pretty much open landscape. Sheffield Helipad was also nearby. Way off right? Found this quirky bit of info about the Bethel Chapel in Cambridge Street, From a site featuring strange tales. Where were trousers forbidden in the pulpit? At Bethel Chapel, Cambridge Street, Sheffield. In 1820, at a time when breeches were universally worn and trousers considered vulgar, the following trust deed was drawn up for the aforementioned chapel: "Under no circumstances whatever shall any preacher be allowed to occupy the pulpit who wears trousers."
