There's also a Catholic Church Of St Anthony, off Raeburn Road, near the ring road (Norton Ave) at Gleadless/ Herdings, which was certainly in existence by the mid-1960's, built to serve the Gleadless valley/ Herdings area. I remember living "on't Valley" as a small child, and being taken to a summer fayre at the church by my mother and aunt, in 1967. (My main memory is of a "pop" group on the flat-roof extension, playing a version of Procol Harem's "Whiter Shade Of Pale" which had just hit the Pop Charts.

Some photos from last month of the inside of St Michael's Chapel (in St Michael's Cemetery). Restored a few years ago.

The Fosters gave the money for the building of the chapel. They were Quakers rather than Catholics but appreciated the work that the Catholic church did amongst the poor in the Crofts.
