Thomas st - 1950

Interesting photo JB,

looking at it I can't help but wonder why most of the Thomas Street (NE) side

of the Eye Witness Works was rebuilt in 1950,

it even looks as if a flat roof was added.

There was a fair amount of air raid damage in the Moorfoot area,

the 50's OS map shows a barren area facing the NE side of works,

wonder if that was down to blitz damage,

or was it just part of housing clearance ?

I don't think any of these have appeared so far:

Gleadless Methodist Church, 1865. I didn't spot the date stone in December last year, but got off a bus at Townend yesterday and saw it straight away. :o:)

Chapel Street in Woodhouse is well named:

United Methodist Free Church 1889, now the Tythe Barn Community Centre

Wesleyan Chapel, 1878. The date stone is rather dark.

Wesleyan School, 1861

Another Chapel, 1905, now Hallam Carpets

I will update the main list over the weekend.

A three and a half day visit to Sheffield this time, most of which I spent photographing items which have already appeared on this site :) . lots of date stones and no collisions with other people or lamp-posts :o.

Lots more stuff to be added in the next few days when I find the time.

I was going to say that I don't know of any buses from Carlisle that go through Gleadless Townend but you are clearly having a "holiday back at home" (home being the City of Sheffield)

Enjoy your stay.

Already back in Carlisle, unfortunately. Not because I don't like living up here, but because I have rather enjoyed wandering around Sheffield with my camera in the last few days, as can be seen from the number of posts made in the last 24 hours.

National Express coach service 537 serves both Carlisle and Sheffield and, like many coach services, probably passes Gleadless Townend en route for points further south, but it doesn't stop there! I travel by car between the two places, but only use public transport and Shanks' Pony whilst in Sheffield.

Not quite back on topic madannie.

This picture of Bodmin Street Reform Chapel, 1890 in post #390 is identical the one in post #388.

Must have been the distraction, sorry!

I know this is no longer there (the building) but does anybody know what the opening date would have been on this stone and what the apparent latin phrase said?

Here is a jpeg version, if somebody has the time perhaps the text could be improved

Hawksley Avenue, 1907. Interesting that the rest of the inscription has been obliterated.

Primative Methodist Centenary Hall & Sunday Schools,

117 Hawksley Avenue, S6.

Kelly's 1925.
