Also on Mansfield Road, quite a number of older houses, numbered between about 150 and 300 even numbers have date stones.

Most of these also have names.

Here are a selection of date stones from private housing on Mansfield Road

The dates seem to get more up to date, as one would expect, as you go down Mansfield Road away from Sheffield but its strange how the newer they are date wise the older and more worn out they look!

The houses on City Road opposite the cemetry also have date stones like these, I will try to get some of those next time I go down that way.

Took me a while but here we go.

opposite City road cemetry, all addresses are City Road

Dates are 1913, 1914 and 1915, while the name "Verdun Villas" obviously has a WW1 connection to these dates.

This house, dated 1902 is further down City Road towards town so as for Mansfield Road, and as expected, the dates seem to get more up to date as we move further from town.

Now I cannot reveal the EXACT address of this house as I think it was once the home of a former "girlfriend" of Stuart0742 from our Norfolk School days.

(That little revelation will teach him to accuse me of taking pictures from old girlfriends bedroom windows lol )

So you remember what I'm on about then?

There's another clue in this picture, also taken on City Road.

Don't know the exact address of this one.

It's on the corner of Monmouth Street and what used to be Hanover Street.

1988 - It doesn't seem to be a stone, more like a plaque.

Google Street View

Has anyone noticed that, notable by their absence, are anything for 1940's, 60's & 70's

They probably had other things on their mind in the 40's.

In the 60's & 70's it probably wasn't considered "cool" lol

Book says it was near the "Royal Hotel" where the travellers had parked their caravans in a field at the back. So where was the Royal Hotel (Woodhouse / Handsworth)? and is it still there? with a date stone perhaps?

Hi Dave, The Royal hotel is just across the road from the Old Cross Daggers, I will try and get a picture of both of them, the Royal was bulldozed back in the early 1900,s and replaced with the one now, havnt noticed a date on this building but will have a closer look.
