Date-Stones on Sheffield Buildings

There is a stone built in to the wall on the Footprint works on Hollis Croft that has the same type of writing as the stone on West Bar. Could be 1740?

The figure 1 is very similar in this one too.

I believe this was some sort of bus or carriage terminus as at one time beyond that point you went into the West Rideing

as the stone on the ground suggest. It is situated beneath the Terminus stone saying Langsett, Wadsley etc.

But as for the market ???

I thought I would throw this one in for good " measure. "

Looks like a topic for a new thread - 'MilePosts'

Is it me or does that sound just a little bit sad?

No its a good idea.

The sadest mile post I have ever seen is in the centre of Alfreton outside the post office in the town square.

It reads "Alfreton, 0 miles"

Do people really need to be told that?

Hillsboro'

1888 Corner of Ball St & Riponden Rd

1892 Ball St

There are loads around that area.

Just looking down the list, and looking on more modern buildings, seems people don't proudly display date-stones on their buildings these days.

Oh dear Dave H

Sense of humour breakdown.

That's the best milestone in the world.

Notice they keep it nicely painted. They're obviously proud of it.

And quite right too.

It still amuses me every time go through Alfreton.

Looks like we can go with 1794 for this one, 117/119 Westbar

Is this the oldest one in the City Centre so far?

I've been told there is a commemorative stone on the Upper Chapel on Norfolk street which was built around 1700.

Unfortunately the building has undergone an about-face so the original front is now at the back - and the side gate is always locked when I'm in the area.

Have we had, or if not, can anyone find this one?

That's the very stone I was refering to Vox.

However, not so much a humour breakdown as a gentle dig at my many friends in this part of the world.

I work in North Derbyshire and I suppose I must stand out as a bit of a DeDar Sheffielder and take a bit of stick over it (especially if United or Wednesday have lost a recent match, - this has little effect on me as I don't really follow football). this gentle jibing is aften reciprocated by me towards the "Derby Tups" and I often refer to them in terms of their own rhyming addage which, remarkably they seem proud of -

Derbyshire born and Derbyshire bred,

Strong int' arm and thick int' head

When a friend of mine from South Normanton first told me of this milepost in Alfreton which seems a bit pointless I replied with something like

"Aye, an yer Tups need dat post coz yer thick int' head"

All in good humour of course.

When I talk about my family it is always my fathers side who are all Sheffielders, now my mothers family are from Whitwell and Alfreton so they are Derby Tups!

Back to business on this one after a brief diversion

There are 2 possible challenges on a milepost thread. Do you want to -

A ) KEEP IT LOCAL

We could create a database of all the old milestones in the Sheffield area and their location, possibly with pictures.

OR

B ) GO TRAVELLING

Can we find the most distant signpost from Sheffield that says on it "SHEFFIELD XXX MILES", where XXX is the largest number we can find.

If we do this I will rule out the tourist one at Lands End with its interchangable destinations and distances (Sheffield 369 miles, - I think?)

In my experience the approach to Sheffield by road is rather badly covered, precedence often being given to other places locally like Leeds and Nottingham so it would be interesting to see how far from home base we can get and still find our City signposted.
